- Use a Philips screwdriver to remove the mounting screws from the roof rack siderails. At least one screw will be on each end of each siderail, which is how the rack was fastened to your roof.
- Remove the complete roofrack in its entirety from the car’s roof and set it down.
- Remove each no-slip tape piece.
Are roof racks also simple to take off? Roof racks that are aftermarket are typically much simpler to take off. The majority just clamp against your door jamb or side rails, and they can be taken off by releasing a few bolts. Once you’ve done it a couple of times, most roof racks will come off in within 5 to 15 minutes.

The Palisade has been located (actually two very similar). They both have roof rack cross rails, which is the only thing I dislike about them. They left behind a couple of unsightly rails across the car, which I have no use for. Is there a way to get rid of them, or am I essentially forced to “live with it” at this point? Thanks, Mike
is simple to remove. The plastic cover should be removable with a tool inside to access the bolt, however I was able to twist the cover with my fingernails. Anyway, it’s simple to remove with just one bolt.

Thule produces the roof racks for Hyundai. (And was half the price.) The Thule kits include a small torque tool that ratchets automatically at 4 Nm, which is the torque specified in the Thule Wingbar’s instructions. There isn’t a 6 Nm torque tool made by Thule. I’ve written to Thule to ask if a 6 Nm tool is available or if the 6 Nm specification might be inaccurate. No reaction to date.

It does seem like they are somehow attached from underneath, which would require removing the headliner. However, I do believe that if someone was motivated enough and could obtain a set of roof rails from Hyundai (or off of a SC with Activity Package found in a junkyard), they could add them by drilling out the holes. Eek!
You are right, according to a closer look at the service instructions, the roof rack is fastened THROUGH the roof. To start the repair or replacement process, “remove interior roof trim” means taking out the headliner and three bolts on each side.
Do-able? Sure. Scary? Yeah. Drill twice, measure once! And once you’re finished, you’d better make sure it’s absolutely watertight and sealed.

I hope this is useful to others; I couldn’t find any internet instructions on how to take out the roof rail plugs, so I made a quick video to demonstrate their operation.
hi, I was hoping you could help me out with something. Do you know if the factor roof rails are hollow all the way to the end once you remove those caps? I was trying to somehow sabotage the wire going through the factor roof rail and into the car because I was thinking of mounting an LED bar on the roof rack. Any observations based on your experience? If you wish to message me, you can find me on Kik at umdnj7. Email is also OK at [email protected]. or this… I just don’t frequently check this site. Thanks!

Factory roof racks—can they be taken off?
The good news is that factory roof racks can be removed if you currently own or want to purchase a car with one. The bad news is that this will be a labor-intensive process if you intend to remove everything, including the factory-flushed or elevated side rails, and go with a naked roof. The majority of factory roof racks are the most challenging to remove since they are made to be permanently attached to the vehicle using built-in manufacturer rails. If you do choose to get rid of your OEM rack, it should probably be a long-term choice because it will involve extensive modifications to your car. Most likely, your roof and headliner will have holes in them. In order to protect the interior of the car from damage, these holes must be carefully sealed. This type of repair is probably doable by a handy DIYer, but if you’re unsure or unexperienced with body work, you might want to take the car to a pro.

Why is that so? We are all accountable for the environment in which we live. Each motorist may make a difference if they are responsible for fuel economy.
Do roof racks damage your vehicle?
A roof rack that is installed and utilized correctly will provide years of trouble-free service and won’t harm your automobile. A poorly fitting, overloaded, or improperly torqued roof rack might harm your vehicle.
Can I leave the roof bars up?
The choice of whether or not to remove a roof rack after each use is undoubtedly influenced by the expenses and advantages (in terms of both time and money).
Roof bars may typically be left in place at all times as permitted by legislation. Roof racks are a fantastic all-year alternative for car racks because there are few good reasons to remove them from the vehicle while not in use. Regular maintenance can reduce wear and tear, which can be impacted by constant use.
Your intended use, how often you use your car, and how well it is maintained are the primary determinants of whether it makes sense for you to have a roof rack on your car at all times. I used to leave mine mounted for a solid three years with no real consequences.

On a summer road trip or winter ski getaway, a vehicle rooftop carrier is a terrific way to bring along additional gear. However, mounting these aerodynamically designed storage containers will significantly improve the fuel efficiency of your car.
You have the choice to increase the cargo space in your sedan or SUV with these pods, as they are also known. You don’t need to get a larger vehicle than you require to transport skis or additional clothing. Simply raise the pod onto the roof and fill it.
Our experts tested how these car rooftop carriers affected the fuel economy of a 2019 Nissan Altima sedan and a 2019 Toyota RAV4 small SUV traveling at 65 mph to see precisely how much of an impact they have on fuel economy and what it will cost consumers at the pump.
Our testing showed that adding the rooftop carrier significantly reduced the sedan’s fuel efficiency. When moving at 65 mph with nothing on the roof, the Altima achieved nearly 48 mpg. The car’s mileage decreased by about 11%, or 5 mpg, when only the roof rack was fitted. However, after the rack and rooftop carrier were fitted, the entire reduction—a 9 mpg loss—was 19 percent.
The SUV’s mileage, on the other hand, showed less of a decrease, as we discovered when we examined bike racks that were hitch- and roof-mounted. Fuel economy was reduced by almost 2% when the roof rack was empty, which equates to a little over a gallon of gas. At 65 mph, the mileage decreased from 41 mpg to 40 mpg. The RAV4’s fuel economy decreased to 35 mpg with the pod added, a 13 percent decrease, or slightly more than 5 mpg.
Note that the extra bike rails were present in the empty racks when we tested rooftop bike racks.
When not in use, consumers should remove the rooftop carrier and roof rack, according to our experts. Owners of sedans in particular experience significant reductions in fuel efficiency when only the roof rack is installed. However, even for SUV owners, there is no need to waste fuel by driving around with an empty pod and rack.
My profession is a direct result of my father purchasing a 1965 Corvette and me choosing an Audi A4 over a Chevy Tahoe. My passion for automobiles was sparked by the Corvette, and the Audi introduced me to automotive journalism, track days, and do-it-yourself vehicle repair. No matter the season, I cycle as much as I can in my spare time.
Can you drive quickly while using a roof rack?
Many manufacturers of roof cargo boxes will advise you to drive at a maximum speed in the manual that comes with your roof box.
The top speed limit for boxes made by the Swedish company Thule is 80 mph. Other producers might suggest 70 mph as the top speed for their specific carrier. These restrictions are probably higher than the top speed permitted in most people’s countries or states.
Some US jurisdictions require drivers to travel at a “reasonable and prudent” speed. This means that depending on the weather, you should change your speed. Therefore, you shouldn’t drive at the top speed limit for the type of road you’re on if it’s raining heavily, there’s fog, or it’s icy. One could argue that you should reduce your speed to a little under the posted recommended speed limit if you’re traveling on public roads with a fully loaded roof box.
In conclusion, you won’t likely run into any issues if you install the box according to the manufacturer’s directions and obey any posted speed limits.
Is purchasing a roof rack worthwhile?
We strongly advise owning a roof rack. They let you transport practically anything that your automobile can’t or won’t fit. Large items like bikes or boats may be involved, as well as filthy items like hockey or camping gear.
Some automobiles have rack systems fitted from the outset; others do not. If your crossbars are factory-installed, you might not require an aftermarket rack system and instead can purchase attachments (like kayak carriers) with universal attachment mechanisms that will snap right onto your factory-installed bars.
You’ll need to purchase a rack system if your bike doesn’t come with factory crossbars. Your roof’s appearance and the items you intend to carry will determine the type of rack you purchase.
