In my 2004 Santa Fe, I’m having trouble releasing the back seats. When the back seats are folded down, the car’s split 40/60 fold-down rear seats make space for an almost flat cargo area behind the front seats.

You must pull on a fabric string that typically hangs from the seat’s back and crease in order to fold down either the 40 or 60 seat. When you want to fold the seat down, you first pull on the cord that releases the seat (the portion you actually sit on), and it folds forward, allowing the back half of the seat to fold down where the seat was. There is an upholstered “ring” through which the cable passes.

My 40-seat in the first picture is in good condition, and you can see the cord coming through the loop. To release the seat, simply pull the cord.

The third image depicts how the release mechanism appears once the seat is raised and moved forward.

The fourth image shows my 60-inch seat without the cord attached to the loop since it is hidden behind or beneath the seat and I am unable to reach it to pull it to engage the release mechanism.

I can’t pull the rope to release the seat on my 60-inch seat since it broke free of that loop and is now behind or underneath the seat. Therein lays the crux of my issue. Even removing the full seat is impossible for me because you need access to it from BEFORE you release the seat. I’ve spent hours trying to draw this cord back into the seat’s crease so I can grip it and pull it to release the seat. I’ve used coathangers and other equipment.

Since the cord is now physically tangled behind or beneath the seat, I can’t suppose that I’m the only person to experience this. I would very appreciate any advice or assistance on how to free the cord.

Between the bottom cushion and the backrest of the rear seats is a pull strap that can be used to release a lock and raise the bottom cushion. The pull straps will only protrude about an inch, or you might not be able to see them since they may have fallen down between the seats. The bottom cushions of the rear seats must first be raised up and moved ahead of the backrest in order for it to lie flat. Only then can the backrest of the seats be lowered. You might need to stick your hand between the cushions and feel for the pull straps if they are not clearly visible between the bottom cushion and the backrest. Once you’ve located the straps, elevate the bottom cushion while pulling upward on the top cushion, which is where the pull strap is, and the seat should tilt forward. The backrest lever is positioned on top of the backrest if you have succeeded in doing this. To tilt the backrest, simply slide the lever in the appropriate direction.

A seven-seater SUV is a desirable option because you’ll have extra room for the kids, the dog, and possibly a few baggage. However, just because you have the option to purchase a three-row SUV doesn’t mean you should. This is because, regrettably, many crossovers and SUVs simply can’t accommodate third-row passengers. The fact that third-row seats are more expensive is one of the main defenses against them. Is it worthwhile to have a feature during your ownership even if you hardly ever use it? Most likely not!
