Can a 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe have Apple CarPlay installed?
As of right now, Hyundai Australia has introduced an infotainment update for a select few vehicles, bringing Apple CarPlay compatibility to variations in the i30, Tucson, and Santa Fe lines.
Apple CarPlay, which was created to essentially replace a car’s in-car entertainment system with the familiar iPhone platform, has now been released internationally in more than 100 model lines since it was first shown in March 2014.
Hyundai’s CarPlay debuted overseas with the Tucson, but now Australian purchasers and current owners of pre-configured models can also use the platform.
CarPlay is a standard feature on the Active, Active X, and SR variants of the compact i30 Series II range, as well as any already-sold vehicles constructed in the fourth quarter of 2015. Existing models can be upgraded with the new software during a 15-minute visit to a Hyundai dealership.
While current Tucson SUV owners can also contact a Hyundai dealership to have their vehicles upgraded, new Tucson SUV customers in the Active and Active X trims will also have immediate access to CarPlay.
The redesigned 2016 Santa Fe Series II, which was released locally in November, now comes standard with CarPlay, and current Series II owners may gain the same access by visiting a dealership.
All three models’ prices are unchanging. More information, opinions, and costs for each are available here: Hyundai Santa Fe, Hyundai Tucson, and Hyundai I30.
According to Hyundai Australia’s product planning manager, Andrew Tuitahi, “the beauty of Apple CarPlay is that it is powered by your iPhone, it is dynamic and linked, and it is therefore easily updated.”
“When Apple makes these systems better by adjusting performance, introducing new features, or enabling new apps, they will be instantly available in your vehicle.”
UPDATE: Hyundai Australia has verified to CarAdvice that, as of right now, higher-spec cars above the Active and Active X grades are not compatible with CarPlay.
Hyundai Australia PR manager Guido Schenken told CarAdvice that while the company hopes to enhance those systems in the future to support CarPlay, “it is not 100% assured at this moment.”
“Although it’s highly probable to occur and that’s what we want to do, we’re working on it with our suppliers. At this time, we can’t confirm the timing.”
When or if the infotainment systems in those models are eventually made CarPlay compatible, it is unknown if owners of existing Elite and Highlander vehicles will have the same dealer-visit upgrade option.
The 2015 Sonata is Apple CarPlay compatible.
It will complete Hyundai’s announcement from more than a year ago that the Sonata would be its first vehicle to integrate CarPlay when the upgrade eventually takes place.
A necessary update to the navigation system’s mapping software is what caused the most recent delay. Hyundai made the decision to bundle the necessary map update with the Apple CarPlay software and provide the bundle for free. According to Johnson, each owner was initially expected to pay about $150 for the map modification. Additionally, it appears that Hyundai has reversed its December 2015 statement to the Detroit Free Press that the CarPlay upgrade itself will be an additional fee.
When customers make the download, they will receive both the CarPlay software and the new navigation map software in one load, Johnson said, “so let’s delay this [map update] and package it together.”
Most recently, Johnson stated, “we said [the CarPlay upgrade] will be released at the end of the first quarter.” “That problem with the map program was the cause of our failure to meet the first-quarter deadline.”
When asked if Hyundai would give a timeline for when owners of an early-2016 Sonata or a 2015 vehicle with a navigation system would be able to receive Apple CarPlay, Johnson simply replied it would be months, not weeks, away.
CarPlay and Android Auto are excellent systems, and people want them, so I understand why these customers are dissatisfied, he said. “We’ll carry this out.”
For owners of 2016 Sonatas built before January, Johnson stated to anticipate a “similar” approach; however, those with the 7-inch touchscreen would receive the upgrade by USB stick, while those with the 8-inch navigation system will receive it through SD card. Given that Hyundai started producing the 2016 model year of the sedan in July of last year, there are a sizable number of 2016 Sonatas that lack CarPlay. Though they are a part of a larger series of updates to make all Hyundai models, not just the Sonata, compatible with Apple CarPlay, the firm won’t say when those updates will be released.
Hyundai added Android Auto to all navigation-equipped 2015 Sonatas in the middle of that year, and all 2016 Sonatas, regardless of manufacture date, come standard with the functionality.
