1915–2001: Chung Ju-Yung
A destitute peasant farming family gave birth to Chung Ju-Yung as their eldest son in North Korea in 1915. He moved permanently to Seoul at the age of 18 in search of a better life.
Success did not come easily. He worked in different jobs, such as railway construction, bookkeeping and dock work. When Mr. Chung opened his own rice store in 1938, it was his first venture into business. A year later, he was compelled to shut down his company due to the rules of the Japanese occupying forces.
Mr. Chung started his own company servicing trucks for the U.S. Armed Forces following the liberation of Korea in World War II. He later entered the engineering and construction industries and went on to construct massive, multibillion-dollar projects all around the world.
His foray into the shipbuilding industry is renowned. Despite having no prior experience in shipbuilding, he was able to convince a client to give him a tens of millions of dollar contract to build a ship. The business he founded is now the biggest shipbuilder in the world.
Mr. Chung created businesses through pure willpower and ingenuity that contributed to Korea being the economic powerhouse it is today. He advanced from modest beginnings to high heights. Even at the height of his career, he maintained his discipline, led a modest life, and put in a lot of effort.
He focused his efforts on the unification of Korea in his later years. This farmer’s son aimed to create channels of communication between the governments of North and South Korea as well as between the two countries’ populations. He helped restore optimism to the most treasured objective of bringing the Korean people back together through private discussions with leaders, international economic deals, and dramatic acts like carrying 1,000 livestock back to North Korea. It’s possible that history will remember Mr. Chung for his final deed of kindness and concern while serving as an ambassador of peace.

How Hyundai Motor, which was once on the rise, lost its luster
The manager with the last name Li claimed that despite discounts as high as 25%, his dealership was only selling around a hundred cars a month. According to the store manager of a nearby Nissan 7201.T dealership, 400 vehicles were sold there each month.
Hyundai’s enormous $1 billion manufacturing facility, which launched last year with a goal of producing 300,000 automobiles annually, is located an hour away.
But according to two people with knowledge of the situation, the facility is only operating at about 30% of its potential because of sluggish sales and a dramatic slowdown in the Chinese auto industry. The sources requested anonymity because the material was confidential.
The fifth-largest automaker in the world, Hyundai, declined to comment on the output or sales of the dealership in Chongqing, but stated that it is “closely cooperating” with the local partner BAIC 1958.HK to turn around the China business. An inquiry for comment from BAIC was not answered.
Hyundai’s problems represent a significant turnabout for the automaker, which was an early success story in China as it released popular new models into a booming market rapidly and affordably.
The combined sales of Hyundai and its partner Kia in 2009 were third in China after those of General Motors GM.N and Volkswagen VOWG p.DE.
The South Korean duo is currently ranked ninth, and from more than 10% at the start of this decade, their market share in China has more than halved to 4% last year.
According to executives and industry experts, Hyundai gave up its formerly dominant position in the low-end category to quickly expanding Chinese rivals like Geely 0175.HK and BYD 1211.HK.
They said that overseas competitors harmed Hyundai’s position as an inexpensive foreign brand by maintaining competitive pricing for mass-market models in addition to defending their territory in premium sectors.
