Does Hyundai Have A Convertible?

Hyundai’s brand-new seven-seat convertible SUV has taken the world by surprise.

Would a Droptop Hyundai Genesis Convertible Be a Good Idea?

You’ve previously seen how the Hyundai Genesis coupe competes with the V-6 versions of the Camaro and Mustang, but when it comes to the convertible body type, the newcomer is left without a rival (no pun intended).

It’s odd that neither Hyundai nor neighboring Korean automaker Kia offer any convertibles, even though the Camaro’s drop-top is coming and the Mustang convertible has been in production for decades. The visual attractiveness of a topless two-door sitting in the middle of the showroom may not be comparable to other vehicles, but low-volume convertibles do not necessarily make the most money compared to other segments.

The final word? Would a Hyundai Genesis convertible look anything like these pictures created by our digital illustrator make you more inclined to tell your friends about the brand?

The 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine in the coupe may make for a slow cruiser if Hyundai made the Genesis convertible heavier to keep the body rigid. We wonder how long it will take Hyundai to bring the 274-horsepower turbo-four from the 2011 Sonata sedan to the Genesis line, if at all. The 306-horsepower 3.8-liter V-6 seems to be a better fit.

A Genesis convertible would need to do more than just look fantastic to have a compelling business case. There are currently a handful of reasonably priced convertibles on the market, including the Mustang and Camaro as well as the Mazda MX-5 Miata and Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder. (Watch for an upcoming special feature piece on eight affordable convertibles.)

How do you feel? Would the Hyundai lineup benefit from the addition of a Genesis convertible?

The world’s only four-door, seven-seat convertible SUV is the Hyundai Santa Fe Cabriolet.

Some people might believe that roofless SUVs are here to stay given that Range Rover is still selling the drop-top Evoque and VW is creating a T-Roc convertible for 2020.

Due to the recent sighting of a Santa Fe Cabriolet in Sydney, Australians may be led to believe that Hyundai is also joining the bandwagon. But that car isn’t even a prototype; it’s not even a finished product.

A 2019 Santa Fe SUV with seven seats had its roof cut off by Hyundai Australia just so that it could be used in a television promo. More specifically, the roof’s removal made it possible for a camera to capture in-depth inside photos of the passengers seated in all three rows.

Hyundai kept the Santa Fe Cabriolet in the basement of its Australian offices after the commercial’s filming was finished. If it weren’t for the nosy CarAdvice guys, we probably wouldn’t have heard anything about it.

They requested permission from Hyundai Australia to test drive the seven-seat convertible SUV, and the response was surprisingly receptive. Due to the Santa Fe Cabriolet’s inability to be driven on public roads, they then filmed a legitimate review of the car at a top-secret location.

How does driving a four-door, seven-seat convertible SUV feel? If Hyundai were to put the design into production, it would need to address the rigidity of the body structure and the wind buffeting. We won’t give away the footage, but just know that. Additionally, engineers might want to create a retractable roof for it, though it would be challenging to do so if the third-row seats were to stay in place.

Finally, the 2.2-liter, four-cylinder turbodiesel with 197 horsepower might not be the ideal option for a convertible. Most likely, a gasoline turbocharged engine from the Hyundai N stable would perform better.

The Camry Solara Coupe and Convertible were no longer manufactured last year, but you may still purchase the convertible model even though hard-top sales have already ended, a Toyota representative has warned. Toyota’s Camry Solara Convertible, which was last manufactured in December 2008, won’t be resuming production due to subpar sales in the midsize convertible market.

However, Toyota has enough stock on hand to endure for at least the following two years, so the vehicle will continue to be offered in dealerships. The Camry Solara Convertible will no longer be produced as there are no plans to replace it, leaving the new Lexus IS C as the company’s most cheap convertible model.

Rick Hesterberg, a spokesman for Toyota’s American manufacturing division, said that there were no intentions to resume Camry Solara convertible production. “I guess there was some expectation that the market might bear a requirement ultimately over the spring/summer months,” he said.
