Due to continued manufacturing concerns and increasing demand, customers are having trouble finding in-stock generators across the whole industry.
Due to layoffs, shutdowns, etc., the Covid-19 outbreak greatly impacted supply chain production. As the country struggled with severe storms, outages, and general unease, consumer demand for generators soared at the same time. The capacity of manufacturers is growing, but it takes time. It also doesn’t help that some raw materials and component parts are in short supply.

Update: Due to a fire hazard for consumers, Honda has recalled 345,000 inverter generators. According to a warning from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Honda portable generator types EB2200i, EU2200i, EU2200i Companion, and EU2200i Camo are susceptible to short circuiting near salt water, which might result in smoke and even a fire. The same generators were a part of a recall for gasoline leaks last year, as we detailed below in our original story on March 22, 2019.
Honda has recalled 200,000 inverter generators because they could catch fire if gasoline leaks from the fuel valve. The generators were sold between February 2018 and February 2019. Although the Consumer Product Safety Commission has not received any reports of injuries related to the generator, Honda has received 19 reports of gasoline leaking from the fuel valve.
The Honda EU2200i, the EU2200i Companion, and the EB2200i are three different models of the same portable generator that are included in the recall. According to a Honda representative, the problem is the result of a manufacturing error. According to Davis Adams, communications manager for Honda’s power-equipment business, “the screws used to assemble the fuel valve may loosen during usage, allowing the valve to leak fuel.”
Why is there a backorder for generators?
Generac Power Systems is still experiencing production delays as a result of COVID-19, the global chip scarcity, and the rising demand for standby generators. We presently anticipate that the permits, installation, inspection, and supply of your new generator will take six to seven months from the date of contract signature.
As we work through these trying circumstances, we want to thank all of our customers in advance for their patience.
Are generators currently difficult to find?
The unexpectedly harsh weather conditions are the main cause of the current shortage of generators in the United States. An unforeseen snowstorm in Texas in the beginning of 2021 resulted in a state-wide power outage. Around this time, demand for generators nationwide began to rise quickly in the US. During this hurricane, there were more than 4 million homes, businesses, and commercial buildings without power in Texas. Similar to this, other regions of the United States started looking for generators in expectation that their places will be the next to experience these extreme weather conditions.
Residents of Texas were in desperate need of generators as a result of the unexpected snowfall in order to keep their houses warm during these chilly days. The energy-independent state of Texas made the decision to switch off the electricity for its citizens in order to relieve the strain on the power infrastructure. To keep their families and houses warm, the locals frantically looked for any type of generator, including automatic home backup generators.
Are there not enough generators?
Power generator demand is high, according to Generac CEO: “We can’t produce them quickly enough,” There is a backlog of orders for backup generators from Generac as the need for alternate home powering sources is rising in response to an increase in extreme weather occurrences, such as the unexpected snowfall across Texas.
Why am I unable to purchase a Honda generator in California?
A new rule passed by state legislators this month bans the sale of specific generator types starting in 2028. In an effort to reduce emissions, California became the first state in the US to ban the sale of gas-powered small single-engine off-road equipment (SORE) including lawnmowers and leaf blowers.
How soon can a generator be obtained?
We can typically install your new generator system in 4-5 weeks after receiving your money, after accepting your generator proposal and making a few crucial decisions like fuel type and permission. The choice of fuel and whether the homeowner is in charge of any fuel contractors or permits will affect this timeframe.
To buy components, obtain necessary permissions, and coordinate schedules with a fuel contractor, homeowners should allow up to 2-4 weeks. Once the installation is arranged, it can typically be finished in a week.
The fuel contractor, Dynamic Electric, and the county permitting agencies must carefully coordinate the installation of a standby generator that is connected to your home. Homeowners should change their timeframe as necessary if they choose to handle their own fuel contractor or the permitting procedure because they may require more time to acquire quotes and manage schedules.
Here is what to anticipate, assuming Dynamic Electric is in charge of the fuel contractor and permitting:
Dynamic Electric schedules the installation of service lines with the fuel subcontractor (natural gas or propane).
The fuel contractor may arrive and set up the service lines prior to Dynamic Electric’s installation date, depending on schedule requirements, but we prefer to do everything in the same week.
Installation Week:
Installation Day 1: The generator is delivered to the house, set up on the service pad, leveled, and all necessary lines and installation materials are laid out. New line is built up by the fuel contractor, and first inspection is prepared.
Install Day 2: The gasoline line has been inspected. The generator’s transfer switch and electrical connections are finished. While this repair is being done, the home’s power will be off for a portion of the day or the most of it.
Install Day 4: The fuel line and generator have passed their final inspection. Depending on your county, there might be just one inspection or there might be two.
Installation Day 5: Dynamic Electric starts up the generating systems and runs them through.
How much time does it take to install a generator?
Generally speaking, it takes one day to install a standard home standby air cooled generator. It would take longer to finish models that used liquid cooling. If a concrete pad is required, the concrete’s drying time will increase by one or two days. The duration is determined using an average application. Applications requiring long lines of wiring or gas piping are exempt from it. Although the primary setup usually takes a single day, there are occasionally a few minor unforeseen problems that call for our return.
Are there still Generac generators on backorder?
According to him, Generac executives are optimistic that supply-chain limitations will ease by the middle of 2022. Due to lengthy lead periods for certain goods, the new production equipment won’t be operational until 2023, according to Jagdfeld.
When should I get a generator?
An emergency generator can be something to consider if you can’t envision surviving through certain seasons without a fan or air conditioner. Your home’s cooling system depends on electricity to be operational, in contrast to your heating system, which operates on gas and will continue to operate even if there is a power outage. An emergency generator will be a lifesaver in the event of a power loss if you live somewhere that gets extremely hot or if someone in your home cannot endure heat because of age or a physical condition.
How long does it take to receive a Generac generator?
The estimated lead time for shipping an in-stock product is 14 business days or less. For in-stock products, the estimated lead time for shipment is 14 business days.
Is Generac produced in China?
The same business that manufactures Generac generators also manufactures and distributes Craftsman generators. Both Generac and Craftsman are manufactured in the United States rather than China. At first, Craftsman generators were only produced for major retailers like Sears. However, Craftsman generators eventually achieved wider-scale production and are easily accessible to everyone.
Do Generac generators have a backlog?
The order backlog at Generac, according to executives, grew throughout the quarter. The company had previously stated that it would end 2022 having completed its backlog, but officials now anticipate ending the year with a sizable order backlog.
Which generators are subject to a recall?
The impacted generators are employed as backup power sources and have gasoline-powered electricity-generating engines. The 8000- and 6500-watt generators of the following unit categories are especially subject to the recall:
- GP8000E
- XT8000EFI
- PRO 6500E
- Residence 6500E
- GP6500E
- PRO 6500M
- XT8000E
- GP6500
The unit type should be mentioned on the product’s front. The product should have a label with the model and serial numbers printed on it. In order to find exact model numbers, visit the CPSC page.
Between June 2013 and June 2021, the generators, which were produced in China and the United States, were offered for sale for between $790 and $1480 at the nation’s top hardware and home improvement retailers as well as online. Ace Hardware, Amazon, Blain’s Farm & Fleet, City Electric Supply, Costco, Do It Best, Fastenal, Home Depot, Lowe’s Stores, Napa Auto Parts, Northern Tool & Equipment, Orgill, Power Equipment Direct, Ravitsky Bros., True Value, and WW. Grainger were just a few of the retailers that sold them.
The Honda EU2200i was released when?
For a very long time, Honda has been well-known for its selection of portable inverter generators. Honda was a pioneer in the use of inverters in portable covers, starting the trip 20 years ago. However, Honda’s inverter technology was so tenacious that it could produce power that was more akin to “line power.” For any other non-inverter generator at the time, that was not possible. Along with this tenacity, they made the generator lightweight, portable, and easy to use; nobody could resist something like that. As the days went by, Honda continued to enhance its designs, models, and performances until they eventually arrived at the Honda EU2000i. This item has gained the title of legend. It was more powerful than before, more durable, delivered excellent performances, and made a walking cat sounds. That was a cunning beast that performed well. It has been on the market for a while, and Honda used it to dominate the generator markets.
Can Honda now fulfill its vast customer base with EU2000i? Can they maintain so much stock of a single item? Can they halt producing fabled generators? No. They needed to continue. Therefore, in the early spring of 2018, Honda made its new legend, the EU2200i, widely available. More than ever, EU2200i is superb. 10% more electricity is produced than by the EU2000i. The Eu2200i is unique among other portable generators both inside and outside of Honda thanks to a ton of brand-new features. It includes features that make it simpler to transport, operate, and maintain, such as color-coded components, stress-free oil fill/drain, a smart fuel shutoff valve, concentrated output at low RPM, and many others.
Honda introduced the first series, the EU1000i, which completely changed the portable inverter generator market. It has a reputation for being quiet, and Honda has maintained that reputation for 20 years; the EU2200i is the version that makes the least noise. If a portable generator must be lightweight, powerful, and silent, only the EU2200i Inverter generator fits that description.
Will generators be prohibited?
On October 9, 2021, California approved a law that, starting in 2024, may result in the outright prohibition of small off-road engines (SORE) used in gas-powered generators, lawnmowers, leaf blowers, weed eaters, and similar lawn care tools.
