In Tokyo, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Ltd. (CATL) and Honda Motor signed a partnership agreement to formally work together to create electric vehicles for the market.
In accordance with the contract, CATL will work alongside Honda to develop lithium-ion EV batteries. Before 2027, CATL will ensure that Honda receives 56 GWh of lithium-ion EV batteries. Currently, CATL uses NCM, which has an energy density of up to 240 Wh/kg, as the core material in their automobile cells.
Honda formally unveiled its aim to speed up electrification in 2016; the company expects its global sales of electric vehicles, comprising HEV, PHEV, and EV, to account for 65% of the group by 2030. Additionally, it was formally declared that more than 20 electric vehicles would be introduced in China by 2025 during the Beijing Motor Show in 2018.
Honda and CATL will jointly develop the cooperative models, which will be made available outside of China’s borders.
In order to offer more efficient localization service support, CATL will open a local office in Utsunomiya, where the Honda R&D Co., Ltd., Automobile R&D Center is located in Tochigi, in the first half of this year.
Customer-centricity has always been a cornerstone of CATL’s strategy. In order to deepen our cooperation, we intend to build more effective channels for communication, quicker reaction times, and deeper relationships.
For Honda’s next electric vehicle applications, Honda and CATL have collaborated closely on cutting-edge and dependable battery technologies. In the future, we’ll help Honda not only in China and Japan, but also as it develops industry-leading electric vehicles for consumers throughout the world.
In order to further both firms’ aspirations for all-electric vehicles, General Motors and Honda declared in 2018 that they were collaborating on new advanced chemistry battery components, including the cell and module. Future goods from both firms, primarily for the North American market, will be able to charge faster, have smaller packages, and have higher energy densities thanks to the next-generation battery. (Previous post.)
In accordance with that arrangement, the businesses will work together using GM’s next-generation battery technology, with Honda intending to purchase the battery modules from GM.

Honda using AGM batteries?
For the Honda Civic, the manufacturer advises utilizing an absorbent glass mat (AGM) battery, particularly if you live in a region with harsh weather. An AGM battery provides greater electrical performance for individuals who have numerous accessories and can withstand heat corrosion.
The AGM battery lasts longer in colder locations and is less likely to leave you stranded on a chilly day because it better resists cold. In addition, AGM batteries are advised for vehicles equipped with Start/Stop technology.
It might not be an AGM battery if you use an aftermarket battery. A flooded battery can be used as an alternative to an AGM battery, but it won’t perform as well, particularly in colder climates or if you have a lot of accessories.
