How can I tell whether an outboard motor is a Honda?
Although every model name begins with “BF,” these two letters are absent from the engine.
The frame’s serial number is stamped into a piece of metal on or close to the stern bracket.
This could also be called a vehicle identification number or a product identification number (VIN).
How are the serial numbers on Honda engines read?
Look for a model number sticker on the engine to determine the model number. Model numbers for Honda engines always begin with the letter “G,” such as “G100,” “GX610,” or “GXV160.” The base engine model is this one. For the majority of your demands, the engine model and serial number should be sufficient.
How is an outboard serial number read?
The most recent serial number labels have a 2-digit number in a box in the label’s lower right corner. The last two digits of the year the outboard was made are the same as these digits.
On a boat motor, where is the serial number located?
We’ll need as much information as possible if we need to repair or replace the motor on your boat. It may be simpler to replace your motor with the appropriate parts if you know the make, model, and serial number. Contrast this with the brand, model, and year of your boat.
You’ll see a plate on the side of your motor. You can find the make, model, and serial number here. If it’s an outboard motor, the serial number is the only thing you’ll need.
The information is the same on each model plate, although the layout may change. The model and serial numbers are typically labeled, but if they are not, ask the repairer if you are unclear or get assistance from a dealer.
- The second half of the number on the second line is the serial number for Suzuki.
- Honda: The model name typically begins with BF and is followed by the letters on the motor’s rear, such as BF50. The serial number, also known as the product identification number, has the format “BXXX-XXXXXXX.”
- A Parsun’s plate can be found on the bracket’s left assembly or the upper portion of the bracket swivel. The serial number has the designation SN.
- The serial number for Yamaha is on the far right of the second line, while the model code is the top number.
- Evinrude – An Evinrude’s transom or mounting bracket is where the serial number is found. The serial number has a label. The model number is especially significant because it provides information about the motor’s type, year, and horsepower.
- Serial numbers for Mercury are typically labeled.
How do you gauge a Honda outboard’s shaft length?
The versatility of an outboard engine is one of its main advantages. With the right mounting, almost any type of boat can be propelled by an outboard motor. You will see outboards hanging on the sterns of anything from little canoes to large cruising sailboats, in addition to motorboats built for large outboards. A tiny auxiliary motor is commonly installed on single-engine boats for emergency use.
The shaft length of an outboard motor is one of the most important decisions you can make, regardless of the size of the boat you are operating. Since every boat is unique, there are several various standard lengths produced by the motor manufacturers. Looking at what you have and pulling out the measuring tape will help you determine the correct size. But how would you quantify it?
Measure the distance between the bottom of the mounting bracket, which sits on the transom, and the top of the cavitation plate, which is the horizontal surface of the lower unit just above the propeller, to determine the length of your outboard motor shaft.
There is an illustration that demonstrates where to take the measurements in the article further on. I’ll also go over the distinction between short and long shafts and how they differ depending on the kind of boat.
How can I tell what Honda model I have?
- Section for Vehicle Identification (digits 10-17). The vehicle’s distinctive serial number is the VIS.
The code can be used to find up relevant information from governmental organizations, insurance companies, and other institutions in addition to information included in the Honda VIN itself.
Where to find it?
The Honda VIN is located on the car itself:
- On the engine block or other components found underneath the hood
- Look for a metal plate on the driver’s side behind the windshield as you exit the vehicle.
- Examine the driver’s side door frame, particularly the region where it connects to the car’s body.
If you can’t find your Honda VIN in the places mentioned above, you might be able to discover it on your car’s insurance and registration paperwork.
On a Honda engine, where is the model number located?
Version Number The model number is written on a sticker that can be found on the recoil or engine cover. Model numbers for Honda engines that begin with the letter G include G100, GX690, and GCV160. The base engine model is this one.
Motor Type Code The engine type code can be found imprinted onto the side of the engine right next to the serial number. Up to 4 characters may be used in engine type codes. Asterisks may be used as placeholders when a code is fewer than 4 characters long (for example, an engine stamped with QX** is a QX type engine).
How is a Honda VIN number decoded?
See how each digit or segment in the 17-digit string is decoded in the VIN decoding diagram below.
The model and model year of the car, the make, the location of the vehicle’s manufacture, and other details are all indicated by a specific character or set of characters in a Honda VIN. Since the model year 1981, a VIN that adheres to the ISO standard has been utilized. The letters O (o), I I and Q (q), which resemble the numbers 0, 1, and 9, are absent from the VIN.
Here is an example Honda VIN that has been decoded using the aforementioned diagram and the Honda decoding chart: 1HGEJ8145WL012057.

What Is an Outboard Motor with Force?
Oct. 5, 2021: Boating, by Morten Storgaard. A motor brand called Force Outboards was born out of the Chrysler Outboard name. They started in 1983 when Bayliner bought Chrysler Outboards, and the name was dropped in 1999.
Does the VIN of an outboard boat motor exist?
Like autos, outboard boat engines are given serial numbers after construction. The location of these numbers and the code used to decipher the alpha-numeric cipher vary depending on the engine manufacturer. Search the shaft of the engine and underneath the cowling, the cover that sits over the engine, to discover the serial numbers on outboard engines.
Using the power lift assist or by holding the cowling handle and lifting up and back toward the boat, raise the boat’s shaft out of the water.
Search throughout the entire shaft for a small set of etched numbers and letters or a small metal plate that has been welded to the shaft. This is the serial number of the boat engine. This number should be noted down or captured with the camera.
If the serial number is not on the shaft, open the engine’s cowling and check the engine block or the interior of the cowling.
By searching for a name like Mercury, Evinrude, or Johnson, to name a few, you can identify the engine’s manufacturer.
A boat motor’s VIN number—does it exist?
The transom mount of the engine is where you may locate the model and serial numbers for your boat engine.
Look on the right side of the motor on the transom mount for Mercury, Mariner, and Force.
You may find the engine serial number for a Volvo-Penta Sterndrive in one of two locations.
The drive number, which is found on the side of the motor, is used to identify Mercruiser Sterndrives.
