The Honda Grom, please. It is a 220 lb., single-cylinder bike with plenty of power for a smaller rider (fewer cylinders equal a narrower bike between your knees). Because this bike won’t feel very powerful if you weigh 250 pounds.
On my way home from the RevZilla Philadelphia Showroom, I rode it to my house in downtown Philadelphia, and it was SO MUCH FUN.
Traffic moves between 25 and 35 mph on average, and if I were a beginner rider, I would feel at ease on this bike and be able to turn quickly and gracefully. I wouldn’t be terrified or concerned if I unintentionally applied the brakes too forcefully and dropped 400-500+ pounds of metal on my foot. Instead, if I had chosen something I’m not frightened to ride every day, I would feel secure, at ease, and pleased with my decision.

When these areas are neglected and you give in to peer pressure or your ego, you not only make the situation more difficult or stressful, but you also slow down the procedure. The urge to “speed things up” by purchasing a larger bike will really slow you down in every manner.

Are Groms at ease?
The majority of my time riding the bike was spent negotiating city traffic because CT’s office was located in the heart of London; the MSX is perfectly sized for this job. I must admit that when I initially saw the little Honda, I had the impression that it would be crowded to ride and extremely uncomfortable over long distances. However, as it turned out, I could not have been more mistaken.
The Grom is surprisingly roomy with broad bars, an upright riding stance, and a 29.7-inch seat. Additionally, you are seated high enough to have a dominating vantage point over other drivers, which is essential for navigating traffic. In fact, I never once felt exposed while riding in congested traffic while riding with the Grom.
Unfortunately, not every component of the MSX is perfectly ergonomic. Taking a passenger presented the toughest challenge. Even though the MSX can accommodate a passenger, I’m not sure I’d recommend it after spending the afternoon traveling around with my girlfriend in the rear. Even at city speeds, the extra weight overpowered the rear damper, the brakes became difficult after repeated usage, and the acceleration away from traffic lights was severely limited. Not optimal.

The success of the Honda Grom surprised the executives. Dealerships nearly instantly ran out of stock when it first hit the sales floor in 2013, and customers kept going back multiple times a week. To get a Honda Grom, people made higher-priced offers and created waiting lists. The Honda Grom is a highly desired motorcycle among all demographics due to its affordable pricing, noticeably high fuel economy, user-friendliness, quick maintenance, and light weight. People are also taken aback by how well the bike handles on busy streets and how well it can keep up with certain full-size motorcycles. Even today, the bike is still very popular and has undergone various upgrades.

He bought a Grom last year and rode east from Sweden to Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, India, and is currently in Myanmar and Thailand. “I just wanted to do something new,” is why I chose the Grom. I know a lot of individuals who have taken smaller bikes on similar journeys, but not a Grom, he claims. He thinks the bike is ideal because it’s stylish, fun, and tiny.
Although the Swedish rider claims that occasionally having company is always welcome, he is currently riding alone. In order to return to Europe, he intends to ride to New Zealand, ship the Grom, and then ride through the Americas. I arrived at the Grom press ride following a really demanding week. I felt like an old dishrag the day before after sending our August issue to the press. Our get-along group of eight riders buzzed through the streets of the city before heading up into the San Gabriel Mountains after touring the Steady Garage shop in Irwindale, California, and admiring some of their incredible Grom builds.
I’m 200 pounds overweight and 6 feet tall. Honda hasn’t disclosed the curb weight of the 2022 model, but the 229-pound weight of the outgoing model has been supplied. The Grom is swift and ready to leave stops even with my large sack of potatoes on board. Since keeping the Grom in the go zone demands the appropriate gear and all the throttle you can twist out of the right grip, the clutch pull is incredibly light, and shifting through the gears is effortless.
The ascent into the mountains was a little slow, but the descent was a complete riot. The Grom is all about corner speed and drafting the person in front of you, despite having 12-inch wheels and only 10 horsepower. For a $3,399 motorcycle, its brakes and suspension are as rudimentary as you’d expect, but they are reliable and consistent. (You can have ABS for an extra $200.) The Grom is resilient and tolerates abuse without complaining.
By the time we returned to the valley, I had almost completely forgotten the source of my anxiety. All of my worries had been replaced by enjoyment as I was so preoccupied with keeping up, being smooth, and smiling under my helmet at how ridiculous it was all.
There’s a myth that a motorcycle is never parked in front of a psychiatrist’s office. This is especially true if it’s a Grom motorcycle. Go ahead and enjoy yourself!
