Brio was stopped, why?

Despite being marketed as the “vehicle that loves you back,” the Honda Brio’s romance with India was largely one-sided. The Brio was introduced as the Honda New Small Concept at the Delhi 2010 Auto Expo and went on sale in India the following year. Now, after just over seven years of production, it is time for the Brio to be retired. The Honda Brio has officially been retired in India, as reported earlier this month as part of our bigger “Cars that will soon be gone forever” piece.

Even though the Brio is still advertised on Honda Car India’s website, a spokesman confirmed that once dealerships have sold all remaining stocks, the Brio will no longer be available there.

The Brio was a sporty, stylish little hatchback when it was introduced in India in September 2011 at a starting price of Rs 3.95 lakh, but due to its inconsistent style, constrained interior space, and tiny boot, the Indian people never really took to Honda’s most cheap vehicle.

Even though it had a midlife update in 2016, costing Rs 4.73-6.81 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), the Brio was undercutting larger, more modern vehicles, and this was evident in its sales results. The Brio’s total sales for Honda in 2018 were only 2,277 units, with just 45 of those sales occurring between October and December. Since there were few buyers for the Brio, it made little sense to build it up to satisfy the new safety and emission standards. As a result, Honda has discontinued the compact hatchback.

Honda’s latest entry-level model in India, the second-generation Amaze, has already made a mark in the compact sedan market. The Amaze, which was introduced in May 2018, has found over 63,000 takers in less than a year.

Honda won’t rush into the affordable vehicle market again after discontinuing the Brio, and it also won’t bring the second-generation Brio, which was unveiled last year, to India.

Is the Honda Brio suitable for long trips?

The 2019 Brio decided to stick with its lesser engine option: a 1.2-liter SOHC i-VTEC gasoline engine with 89 horsepower and 110 Nm of torque. A continuously variable transmission transmits these values to the front wheels. The new engine has 11 horsepower and 17 Nm less power than its predecessor.

The previous decline in output numbers carried over into the drive. Although the Brio wasn’t underpowered, the engine only provided enough power for the car to drive at will. Even at a standstill, the CVT wasn’t slack about sending power to the front wheels; however, as with other CVTs, if you want more when passing, just mash the accelerator.

The smaller mill this time wasn’t cut to give you that rush, unlike the 1.3L engine from before, which would make you grateful for the soft headrests at sudden accelerations. Whether this is okay or not largely depends on your usage.

The Brio has benefited greatly from its compact wheelbase and front-wheel-drive configuration. Since it weighs little over 950 kilograms, it relatively handled corners effectively and did so without tossing objects around within the vehicle. Driving on the highway was calm and stable, and maneuvering in confined spaces was not at all difficult. The Brio performed well on both short and long journeys and felt more balanced overall than before. But for safer stopping, the front-disc/rear-drum brakes needed to be adjusted because they were a little sticky.
