Shane Lowry’s thrilling victory at the BMW PGA Championship on Sunday put an end to his three-year winless streak.
At Wentworth, the Irishman edged off longtime friends Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm by one shot to win his first championship since the 2019 Open Championship in July.
The 35-year-old carded a bogey-free 17-under over the championship’s amended 54 holes, which was reduced from the traditional 72 holes after Friday’s second round was postponed due to the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. This victory was his sixth on the DP World Tour.
Lowry entered Sunday two strokes off the lead after shooting a six-under 66 and a 68 in the first two days, but his final round erupted with an eagle at the fourth hole.
Rahm, the 2021 US Open champion, had set the clubhouse target at 16-under after shooting a joint-event best 62, and Lowry tied him with a fourth birdie on the 12th hole.
With McIlroy right behind him, Lowry needed to birdie the last hole to avoid a playoff with Rahm after a steady run of five consecutive pars. The Irishman made it a hat-trick to put himself within striking distance of the championship after birdying the 18th on each of the first two rounds.
The Northern Irishman needed to make an eagle on the par-five 18th hole to force a playoff, and he came agonizingly close to doing so. The newly minted PGA Tour Championship champion reached the green in just two strokes, but his 23-foot eagle putt fell just inches short of claiming victory for Lowry.
Lowry told reporters, “I am extremely happy. “To win on this tour, or any tour, is so difficult. Some of the top players in the world are attempting to catch up with you.
“I believed that I was capable of winning all year long, but I thought that I lacked the breaks necessary to triumph in competitions.
“I’m simply extremely glad and thankful that I was able to win this event as well. I don’t think I like to do things lightly, so it’s good to have this on my résumé as well.”

Lowry’s ideas were straightforward and sincere. The Irishman’s mental state was being affected by the fact that it had been more than three years since he had held a trophy in his hands. But Lowry overcame the doubt that crept into his head on Sunday and defeated a field of elite players for a one-stroke triumph.
If I’m being honest, there are some guys here that I just can’t stand, stated Lowry. “The fact that they are here bothers me. Play at Wentworth was halted by officials out of respect for the slain commander. Flags were flown at half-staff around the nation on Friday as a mark of respect for the late Queen.

In the year he won, Alex Noren went out early and shot 62, and I remember him doing it to me, Lowry recalled. “That crossed my mind. I just gave it my all.”
On this particular day, Lowry’s performance was adequate. The Irishman shot a score of 17-under with an eagle and five birdies, including one at the par-5 18th hole. About 15 minutes later, on the 18th green, McIlroy’s final eagle putt fell past the hole, giving Lowry the victory.
At the beginning of the week, I was completely open about how I felt about the situation, Lowry stated. “First and foremost, I wanted to compete and win this event for myself. And not just for this tour, but for everyone who has supported it. This seems like a win for the good folks, in my opinion.”

Does the BMW Golf Tournament have a cut?
The 2022 BMW PGA Championship will resume play on Sunday after being suspended on Thursday due to the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. With several groups still having to complete their first rounds, play will go back up on Saturday at 6:40 a.m. local time in Surrey, England (1:40 a.m. ET).
The DP World Tour issued a statement saying, “All original second round tee times will stay the same and the second round of the BMW PGA Championship will continue at 6:40 a.m. on Saturday morning.” The players who haven’t finished their first round will start doing so at 7:30 a.m. from the spot on the course where they finished on Thursday.
Instead of the usual 72 holes, the tournament, which is the biggest on the DP World Tour, will only have 54 holes.
The statement read, “The Rolex Series event will now be played over 54 holes with a goal of wrapping up on Sunday as scheduled. “Due to ongoing planning for the state funeral, we are unable to guarantee the staff, amenities, or security of the location on Monday, thus it is not possible to play the entire 72 holes and finish on that day. Flags will continue to fly at half-mast throughout the weekend at Wentworth, and black ribbons will be made available for everyone to wear.”
Because the Englishmen Andy Sullivan and Tommy Fleetwood and the Norwegian Viktor Hovland shared the lead at the end of play on Thursday, their opening rounds of 8-under 64 carry even more significance. With only 36 holes remaining, it will be more challenging for chasers to catch up to those at the top of the leaderboard.
The DP World Tour made no mention of altering the cut, therefore it should be reasonable to presume that it will happen after the first 36 holes. Cantlay now ranks second in the FedEx Cup eligibility standings behind only Scottie Scheffler after his victory. When play starts on Thursday at East Lake, he will begin two strokes behind Scheffler.
Cantlay was in the lead going into the final round for the third time in his career, which was the fourth time overall. The most top-10 finishes of any year in his career have come in the 2021–22 season, however he has yet to claim an individual championship. The Robert Trent Jones Sr.-designed South Course offers some extremely nice vistas of significant portions of the golf course as it winds across the undulating hills of northern Delaware.
