The BMW PGA Championship’s Players to Watch
Rory McIlroy is one of the top contenders at the BMW PGA Championship, which gets underway Thursday at the Wentworth Club in Surrey, England, after making his comeback on August 28 at the Tour Championship in Georgia.
By pulling off the biggest final-round comeback in Tour Championship history, McIlroy won his third FedEx Cup championship. At Wentworth, he will be a compelling figure, but here are five other players to keep an eye on.
It’s challenging to keep everyone content with money, sponsors, and competing golf tours.
The BMW PGA Championship, which will take place this week in England, will feature competitors from the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and the fledgling LIV Golf series.

Out of the hundreds of events held each year, all but a dozen professional golf tournaments depend on a marquee sponsor and dozens of other co-sponsors to contribute millions of dollars to make each event possible.
There are a few significant outliers, including the British Open, the Masters, the US Open, and the P.G.A. Championship.
But even a prestigious event like this week’s BMW PGA Championship at the Wentworth Club in Surrey, England, one of the top tournaments on the DP World Tour, depends on the German automaker and another dozen sponsors, including Zoom, Rolex, and Hilton, to pay the players, cover event costs, and have some money left over for charitable causes.
There is only one issue. More than a dozen golfers from the competing LIV Golf series, which is supported by Saudi Arabia, will compete in the BMW PGA Championship, including fan favorites Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood as well as several contenders like Kevin Na, Patrick Reed, and Martin Kaymer.
The DP World Tour has a slightly different policy than the PGA Tour, which has suspended players who have joined LIV and prevented them from competing in PGA Tour events. For the time being, participants may participate in the competition if they have qualified for tournaments like Wentworth based on their global rankings or other factors.
Given the sums of money sponsors provide to a DP World Tour, PGA Tour, or any other international tour, they want something in return. They want excellent performers to provide interesting drama, yes, but they also want corporate perks and media attention. Rory McIlroy defeated Scottie Scheffler by one stroke in the final round of the Tour Championship on the PGA Tour on August 28 to win the FedEx Cup, the tour’s season-long points competition. (The Tour Championship is sponsored by Southern Company, Coca-Cola, and Accenture, in addition to FedEx, a season-long sponsor of the PGA Tour who provides a significant portion of the $18 million first-place payment.)
Additionally, having a winner from LIV Golf puts sponsors and the DP World Tour itself in an awkward position. The DP World Tour is a strategic partner of the PGA Tour but has let LIV players to compete.
Top tour players including U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick slammed the LIV presence at Wentworth before the competition had began, calling it “disappointing.” The BMW PGA Championship champion from 2021, Billy Horschel, stated that the LIV golfers shouldn’t be permitted to compete on the DP World Tour at all since “they decided to go play on that tour and they should go play there.”
Sponsorship has been impartial.
Tim Holzmuller, a spokesman for BMW Group Sport Engagement, said, “The objective of the BMW Group is to stage a world-class event and deliver a premium experience for players, spectators, and enthusiasts at all our sport engagements.”
Great athletes attract followers and home television watchers. Additionally, a matchup between a LIV golfer and a player on the PGA or DP World Tour would undoubtedly boost ratings. But it’s difficult to predict what will happen to sponsors after that.

At the 2022 BMW Championship, Patrick Cantlay will defend his title in an attempt to become the first golfer since Nick Price (1993–1994) to win back-to-back in this competition. Only 30 of the 70 golfers competing in the second tournament of the 2022 FedEx Cup Playoffs will move on to the Tour Championship the following week. Experienced golfers Will Zalatoris, Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm, and Justin Thomas are among those aiming to unseat Cantlay and capture the BMW Championship in 2022, which will award the victor 2,000 FedEx Cup points.
The opening tee times are scheduled for 9:10 a.m. ET on Thursday, August 18, from Wilmington Country Club. According to Caesars Sportsbook’s odds for the 2022 BMW Championship, McIlroy is the 10-1 favorite going into this week’s competition. Since the PGA Tour returned in June of 2020, SportsLine’s proprietary model, developed by DFS specialist Mike McClure, has been scorching hot. In reality, since the relaunch, the model has won almost $9,600 on its best wagers, winning tournament after tournament.
J.T. Poston was one of McClure’s model’s top picks to win the 2022 John Deere Classic. For the entire tournament, McClure’s best bets returned nearly $1,100, and that wager hit at +5500. McClure’s model was all over Scottie Scheffler’s first major championship triumph at the 2022 Masters going into the weekend.
Additionally, Collin Morikawa winning the 2021 Open Championship outright was one of McClure’s top choices despite being a huge 40-1 long shot. The 2021 U.S. Open triumph by Jon Rahm (10-1) in his first major championship was also covered in the model. Even though Rahm was two strokes back of the lead going into the weekend, the model still predicted that he would win.
The same model has also correctly predicted eight important events as of this weekend. Anyone who has stayed with it has seen enormous gains.

- 35-1 Hideki Matsuyama
- 35-1 for Scott Stallings
- 35-1 for Aaron Wise
- 35-1 Sam Burns
Collin Morikawa, Young, and Niemann are all contenders. All things considered, these three golfers continue to enjoy support, especially Young, who ranks third in the group in strokes gained from tee to green. The presumptive PGA Tour Rookie of the Year has been excellent so far and would be in sole ownership of the lead if it weren’t for some terrible putting on Friday.
It is challenging to ignore what Morikawa is doing if you’re searching for a little extra juice for your squeeze. Going back to “Old Collin,” as he described himself on Thursday, the two-time major champion has had great success with his irons and terrible success with his putter. He is recorded at 60-1 and is only five shots behind the lead despite his struggles on the greens.
