The PGA TOUR Playoffs’ sixth and final event.
The BMW Championship, the last event on the PGA TOUR schedule, has traditionally been a significant occasion for the golfers and attracts one of the top fields in the world. For the playoff event, only the top 70 finishers in the FedExCup overall rankings are eligible. Since 2007, tournament partner BMW has lent their name to the event. For the first time, the BMW Championship and a PGA TOUR event were held in the US state of Delaware in 2022. At the end of a thrilling week of golf at the Wilmington Country Club, Patrick Cantlay made history by becoming the first person to successfully defend a championship at a playoff event. The BMW Championship will make a comeback to Olympia Fields Country Club in 2023. (Chicago, 18th to 25th August).
It’s challenging to keep everyone content with money, sponsors, and competing golf tours.
The BMW PGA Championship, which will take place this week in England, will feature competitors from the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and the fledgling LIV Golf series.

Out of the hundreds of events held each year, all but a dozen professional golf tournaments depend on a marquee sponsor and dozens of other co-sponsors to contribute millions of dollars to make each event possible.
There are a few significant outliers, including the British Open, the Masters, the US Open, and the P.G.A. Championship.
But even a prestigious event like this week’s BMW PGA Championship at the Wentworth Club in Surrey, England, one of the top tournaments on the DP World Tour, depends on the German automaker and another dozen sponsors, including Zoom, Rolex, and Hilton, to pay the players, cover event costs, and have some money left over for charitable causes.
There is only one issue. More than a dozen golfers from the competing LIV Golf series, which is supported by Saudi Arabia, will compete in the BMW PGA Championship, including fan favorites Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood as well as several contenders like Kevin Na, Patrick Reed, and Martin Kaymer.
The DP World Tour has a slightly different policy than the PGA Tour, which has suspended players who have joined LIV and prevented them from competing in PGA Tour events. For the time being, participants may participate in the competition if they have qualified for tournaments like Wentworth based on their global rankings or other factors.
Given the sums of money sponsors provide to a DP World Tour, PGA Tour, or any other international tour, they want something in return. They want excellent performers to provide interesting drama, yes, but they also want corporate perks and media attention. Rory McIlroy defeated Scottie Scheffler by one stroke in the final round of the Tour Championship on the PGA Tour on August 28 to win the FedEx Cup, the tour’s season-long points competition. (The Tour Championship is sponsored by Southern Company, Coca-Cola, and Accenture, in addition to FedEx, a season-long sponsor of the PGA Tour who provides a significant portion of the $18 million first-place payment.)
Additionally, having a winner from LIV Golf puts sponsors and the DP World Tour itself in an awkward position. The DP World Tour is a strategic partner of the PGA Tour but has let LIV players to compete.
Top tour players including U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick slammed the LIV presence at Wentworth before the competition had began, calling it “disappointing.” The BMW PGA Championship champion from 2021, Billy Horschel, stated that the LIV golfers shouldn’t be permitted to compete on the DP World Tour at all since “they decided to go play on that tour and they should go play there.”
Sponsorship has been impartial.
Tim Holzmuller, a spokesman for BMW Group Sport Engagement, said, “The objective of the BMW Group is to stage a world-class event and deliver a premium experience for players, spectators, and enthusiasts at all our sport engagements.”
Great athletes attract followers and home television watchers. Additionally, a matchup between a LIV golfer and a player on the PGA or DP World Tour would undoubtedly boost ratings. But it’s difficult to predict what will happen to sponsors after that.
After a more deliberate regular-season run, the PGA Tour veteran is rushing into the postseason.
Adam Scott’s path to the top of the leaderboard at the 2022 BMW Championship has been unusual because he is one of just two men to qualify for each iteration of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. The Australian, who was firmly on the postseason bubble going into the St. Jude Championship, extended his postseason and moved into the Philadelphia region playing with house money by earning his third top-five result of the year.
Through the first two rounds at Wilmington Country Club, he made good use of those chips. At 8 under, Scott holds the sole advantage over numerous well-known players. The former Masters champion has been the only player to shoot for rounds of 65 to 69, but a double-bogey on his 17th hole on Friday reduced his lead from three strokes to one.
It might wind up costing you money. Scottie Scheffler, Cameron Young, Corey Conners, and Jordan Spieth are only one behind of Scott at 7 under. Conners is one of the top ball-strikers on the Tour, Young is arguably the Rookie of the Year, Scheffler is the Player of the Year, and Spieth is the ultimate wildcard, which almost makes him the most perilous of all.
A similarly intimidating group of competitors, including the two-time FedEx Cup champion Rory McIlroy and the defending champion Patrick Cantlay, are only one stroke behind them. Both players have shot straight rounds of 67.
Although half of the field is presently within six strokes of the lead, it would be reckless to predict that this tournament will be decided by this tiny group. With 36 holes remaining, the BMW Championship is still anyone’s game, mirroring the drama of the St. Jude Championship.
