Recently, the US, Canada, and Mexico selected bp (the maker of the Castrol brand) to resume supply of BMW Group Engine Oil. As of February 2021, Castrol, who served as the supplier for a total of 14 years, has started up again.

For a further three years, to the end of 2022, Shell has been officially reaffirmed as BMW AG’s exclusive preferred supplier of aftermarket engine oils in EMEA for all BMW Group brands, including BMW, BMW I BMW M, MINI, BMW Motorrad, and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.

I believe that the BMW Oil sold by the dealer is the exact same oil that is shipped by the manufacturer. Only BMW sells this oil, at least in the USA, and it is produced for BMW by Castrol. In other words, it differs from the Castrol Syntec that is sold in nearby stores.

If I recall properly, the primary issue was that many consumers believed the BMW Oil to be Syntec and disliked using it since they believed it to be a fake Synthetic.

Which type of oil do BMW dealers use?
