In 2017, veteran Mercedes-Benz dealer and executive Bernhard Kuhnt assumed control of the North American division.
Bernhard Kuhnt, 53, the CEO of BMW of North America, is moving to Germany to lead the automaker’s German division.
BMW announced Friday that Sebastian Mackensen, a 49-year-old former executive of the Volkswagen Group with knowledge of the American market, will take over in North America as of September 1.
Mackensen will now serve as president and CEO of BMW of North America in addition to managing all sales, marketing, and distribution activities for the BMW Group from Canada to Argentina.
Senior Vice President Mackensen is in charge of the German market for BMW. He previously oversaw BMW’s Mini division.
Mackensen has a wealth of expertise in North America, having served for five years as the region’s sales director for Audi.
Prior to that, he worked for Porsche Cars North America in management positions in customer service and commercial development.
Mackensen’s new position requires him to guide BMW through the COVID-19 pandemic’s aftereffects and this year’s microprocessor supply crisis. In the meantime, BMW is preparing to engage Mercedes-Benz on a new front in the United States: electric vehicles. The i4 four-door fastback and the iX midsize crossover are two electric vehicles that BMW will debut in the first quarter of 2019.
Kuhnt stated, “We think that customers are moving in this way. “Electrified automobiles are receiving more interest than ever before.”
In 2017, Kuhnt, a former Mercedes-Benz dealer and executive, assumed control of the North American division.
For the first time since 2015, BMW won the U.S. luxury sales crown in 2019 under his leadership by defeating Mercedes-Benz. In 2020, the Munich manufacturer maintained its lead despite pandemic-related production and commercial halts.
The popular Kuhnt managed a product offensive that included the launch of the flagship X7 crossover and the 8 Series convertible and Gran Coupe.
BMW and two American subsidiaries came to an agreement last year to pay a $18 million fine to settle claims that they had provided false information regarding the automaker’s retail sales volume in the country. According to the Securities and Exchange Commission, BMW inflated its reported retail sales between 2015 and 2019 to enable them close the gap between internal aims and actual retail volume and “publicly maintain a leading retail sales position relative to other premium automotive businesses.”
Kuhnt worked with Mercedes-Benz from 1983 until 2003, including as vice president of sales for Mercedes-Benz USA, where he was in charge of the divisions in Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Prior to joining Jaguar Land Rover in 2009, he later served as the manager of Mercedes-Benz stores in Anaheim, California, and Chandler, Arizona.
Stefan Kramer will join BMW of North America as executive vice president and CFO, the automaker also revealed on Friday. Stefan Richmann will take over as CEO of BMW Group Financial Services in the United States and the Americas, and Kramer will succeed him.
