For the time being, BMW and Mercedes-Benz break their “long-term” automated driving cooperation.
Less than a year after the deal was announced, BMW Group and Mercedes-Benz AG have abandoned their plan to work together for a long time to create the next generation of automated driving technologies.
The breakup was “mutual and cordial,” according to the German manufacturers, who have all decided to focus on their current development trajectories. Working with brand-new or previous partners may be one of these new paths. The two businesses also stressed the possibility of future cooperation.
It was never intended for the agreement, which was made public in July 2019, to be exclusive. Instead, it was a reflection of the flexible development agreements that are becoming more and more popular among legacy manufacturers in an effort to divide the labor-intensive, capital-intensive task of creating, testing, and validating automated driving technologies.
Both businesses did have some ambitious objectives. The cooperation planned to create driver assistance technologies, highly automated highway driving, and automated parking, and to introduce that technology in mass-produced vehicles by 2024.
It appears that the anticipated advantages of collaboration were outweighed by reality: according to the companies’ statements, developing a shared technology platform was a more difficult and expensive task than anticipated. BMW and Mercedes-Benz AG said that prior to the contract’s signing last year, they were unable to have in-depth expert conversations and speak with suppliers regarding technology roadmaps.
According to the companies, “in these discussions — and after extensive review — both sides concluded that the timing is not right for successful implementation of the cooperation in light of the expense involved in creating a shared technology platform, as well as current business and economic conditions.”
Mercedes and BMW have additional endeavors and collaborators. For instance, Intel, Mobileye, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, and Ansys are partners in a project with BMW. A robotaxi pilot project was started by Daimler and Bosch in San Jose last year.
Both businesses are continue collaborating on other projects in the interim. Future autonomous car collaboration between BMW and Mercedes-Benz
BMW and Daimler, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz, have declared a new alliance to collaborate on the creation of next-generation autonomous vehicles.
This new alliance will prioritize “advancing the development of next-generation technologies for driver assistance systems, automated driving on highways, and parking features (up to SAE Level 4),” according to a joint press release.
The member of the Daimler AG Board of Management who is in charge of Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development, Ola Kallenius, said:
“One of the most significant trends for us right now is autonomous driving, and the entire Daimler Group is working extremely hard to develop it. At Daimler, safety has always come first. We want to create a dependable overall system that provides clients with observable additional value rather than individualized, stand-alone solutions.
