The only place the N54 has a VIN number is on a sticker just before the transmission. I found out the hard way that you need be careful not to rub the sticker since it turns out that the numbers come off very readily.
The VIN is absent from the white tag. The VIN provided by the seller was checked before I purchased an eBay motor, but when I received it, I was unable to match the engine to the VIN. As the casting dates for the block and head were almost a week apart from the construction date of the automobile based on the VIN, I ultimately decided to believe them.
