Olympus Fields Country Club

The 2020 BMW Championship has already taken place at Chicago’s Olympia Fields Country Club. The winner of the playoff between Dustin Johnson (USA) and Jon Rahm (Spain) at the event’s final hole made one of the most stunning putts in tournament history. It was really too bad that spectators couldn’t see this because of the Coronavirus outbreak. Things will likely change in 2023. The U.S. Open in 2003, the U.S. Amateur in 2015, and the Women’s PGA Championship in 2017 were all held at Olympia Fields. The renowned “North Course” at Olympia Fields, created by Willie Park Jr. in 1923, will host the BMW Championship.

After play was halted on Thursday, the largest tournament of the DP World Tour will continue on Saturday in England.

The 2022 BMW PGA Championship will resume play on Sunday after being suspended on Thursday due to the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. With several groups still having to complete their first rounds, play will go back up on Saturday at 6:40 a.m. local time in Surrey, England (1:40 a.m. ET).

The DP World Tour issued a statement saying, “All original second round tee times will stay the same and the second round of the BMW PGA Championship will continue at 6:40 a.m. on Saturday morning.” The players who haven’t finished their first round will start doing so at 7:30 a.m. from the spot on the course where they finished on Thursday.

Instead of the usual 72 holes, the tournament, which is the biggest on the DP World Tour, will only have 54 holes.

The statement read, “The Rolex Series event will now be played over 54 holes with a goal of wrapping up on Sunday as scheduled. “Due to ongoing planning for the state funeral, we are unable to guarantee the staff, amenities, or security of the location on Monday, thus it is not possible to play the entire 72 holes and finish on that day. Flags will continue to fly at half-mast throughout the weekend at Wentworth, and black ribbons will be made available for everyone to wear.”

Because the Englishmen Andy Sullivan and Tommy Fleetwood and the Norwegian Viktor Hovland shared the lead at the end of play on Thursday, their opening rounds of 8-under 64 carry even more significance. With only 36 holes remaining, it will be more challenging for chasers to catch up to those at the top of the leaderboard.

The DP World Tour made no mention of altering the cut, therefore it should be reasonable to presume that it will happen after the first 36 holes. If they want to win the largest trophy on the DP World Tour this weekend, they will need to play immaculate golf since the leaders, Rory McIlroy and Billy Horschel, who is also the defending champion, are four shots behind them and Matt Fitzpatrick and Jon Rahm are even farther back.

At the 2022 BMW Championship, the South Course at Wilmington Country Club will be played out of order.

The following describes the layout of the South Course at Wilmington Country Club for the 2022 BMW Championship: The front nine will be holes 10-13-14-15-5-6-7-8-9, and the back nine will be holes 1-2-3-4-16-17-11-12-18. So, at the very end of the approaches, we’ll still get to that clubhouse.

Although it may seem unusual, the reorganization should give the last four holes plenty of drama.

Water surrounds the majority of the triangle green, which has three distinct plateaus and gets narrower the further back and left you go, on the par-3 15th (the traditional No. 17), which measures up to 234 yards. That’s where I’m assuming the Sunday pin will be, I think.

The 16th, the regular No. 11, can play as far as 393 yards, but after a few rounds, it will probably be shortened and utilized as a drivable par 4. It plays slightly uphill and has a bunker around 85 yards from the green on the right side of the fairway. This will be a really fascinating club selection.

There is a lot of sand trouble on No. 17 (the regular No. 12), which might make the 71st hole rather interesting.

The following hole, the standard 18th, is a 446-yard dogleg left par 4. Both sides of the fairway have bunkers that could catch several tee shots. Players must climb a slope to reach the green, which is short on both sides and is defended by sand. Additionally, the second shot becomes more blind the further back the pin is placed.

So, the BMW Championship is likely to have a dramatic end. However, if you ever have the opportunity to play the South Course at Wilmington Country Club, don’t anticipate to experience the identical layout that you will see on television.

The BMW Championship, the second competition of the PGA Tour’s 2021–22 playoffs, will take place this weekend at Wilmington Country Club in Wilmington, Delaware. Robert Trent Jones Sr. originally created the course in 1959, and Andrew Green finished a restoration last year. The 7,534-yard course has a par of 71.

When Adam Scott started his round on Friday, he was one shot behind leader Keegan Bradley and had reached a tournament-high 10 under par at one point. However, a late double bogey reduced him to 8 under par. He will start the weekend one ahead of a group of A-listers.

There were 70 golfers that qualified for the competition; after Cameron Smith and Tommy Fleetwood withdrew, there are now only 68 players left. This week there is no reduction.

Where in Europe is the BMW golf tournament taking place?

The BMW PGA Championship, which will take place this week in England, will feature competitors from the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and the fledgling LIV Golf series.

Out of the hundreds of events held each year, all but a dozen professional golf tournaments depend on a marquee sponsor and dozens of other co-sponsors to contribute millions of dollars to make each event possible.

There are a few significant outliers, including the British Open, the Masters, the US Open, and the P.G.A. Championship.

But even a prestigious event like this week’s BMW PGA Championship at the Wentworth Club in Surrey, England, one of the top tournaments on the DP World Tour, depends on the German automaker and another dozen sponsors, including Zoom, Rolex, and Hilton, to pay the players, cover event costs, and have some money left over for charitable causes.

There is only one issue. More than a dozen golfers from the competing LIV Golf series, which is supported by Saudi Arabia, will compete in the BMW PGA Championship, including fan favorites Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood as well as several contenders like Kevin Na, Patrick Reed, and Martin Kaymer.

The DP World Tour has a slightly different policy than the PGA Tour, which has suspended players who have joined LIV and prevented them from competing in PGA Tour events. For the time being, participants may participate in the competition if they have qualified for tournaments like Wentworth based on their global rankings or other factors.

Given the sums of money sponsors provide to a DP World Tour, PGA Tour, or any other international tour, they want something in return. They want excellent performers to provide interesting drama, yes, but they also want corporate perks and media attention. Rory McIlroy defeated Scottie Scheffler by one stroke in the final round of the Tour Championship on the PGA Tour on August 28 to win the FedEx Cup, the tour’s season-long points competition. (The Tour Championship is sponsored by Southern Company, Coca-Cola, and Accenture, in addition to FedEx, a season-long sponsor of the PGA Tour who provides a significant portion of the $18 million first-place payment.)

Additionally, having a winner from LIV Golf puts sponsors and the DP World Tour itself in an awkward position. The DP World Tour is a strategic partner of the PGA Tour but has let LIV players to compete.

Top tour players including U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick slammed the LIV presence at Wentworth before the competition had began, calling it “disappointing.” The BMW PGA Championship champion from 2021, Billy Horschel, stated that the LIV golfers shouldn’t be permitted to compete on the DP World Tour at all since “they decided to go play on that tour and they should go play there.”

Sponsorship has been impartial.

Tim Holzmuller, a spokesman for BMW Group Sport Engagement, said, “The objective of the BMW Group is to stage a world-class event and deliver a premium experience for players, spectators, and enthusiasts at all our sport engagements.”

Great athletes attract followers and home television watchers. Additionally, a matchup between a LIV golfer and a player on the PGA or DP World Tour would undoubtedly boost ratings. But it’s difficult to predict what will happen to sponsors after that.
