Since 2013, BMW has been producing a line of small executive automobiles known as the 4 Series. The coupé and convertible 2-door variants of the 3 Series were separated into a new series by BMW, giving rise to the 4 Series. The second version of the 4 Series is presently available.
At the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan, in January 2013, the original 4 Series concept car was unveiled. The coupe, convertible, and five-door liftback (marketed as a “Gran Coupe”) body types were produced for both versions. The 4 series’ body is extremely similar to the all-electric BMW i4 in terms of design.
For the first generation, there were turbocharged inline-3, inline-4, and inline-6 engines that could run on either gasoline or diesel. The plug-in hybrid powertrain was introduced for the second generation. The drivetrain configuration of the 4 Series is rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, similar to the corresponding 3 Series models (“xDrive”).
The 4 Series’ high-performance variant is the BMW M4. The F82/F83, the first version of the M4, shares an inline-six turbocharged gasoline engine with the F80/F81 M3.

This week, the new 2021 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe (G26) began going into production at the BMW facility in Munich. With a phased global deployment, the second-generation four-door coupe will be available to consumers starting in November 2021. The pictures below were taken at the BMW plant in Munich and show the brand-new 4 Series Gran Coupe in 420d xDrive trim and gorgeous San Remo Green paint. The BMW 4 Series Convertible’s launch paintwork was the exact same shade.
On the production floor is also the top-tier M440i GranCoupe. The premium four-door coupe, which is painted Aventurine Red, stands out because to its aggressive body form and sporty design characteristics. Of course, the 4 Series grille—possibly the most divisive design element ever used by a BMW—remains on the new grand coupe. But the rest of the vehicle features a dynamic, sleek appearance that is enhanced by a lovely roofline. It’s also good to see the 4 Series Gran Coupe’s flush door handles, which are more stylish than the coupe’s traditional pull handles. The hatchback’s trunk has a ton of storage room and is very practical.
The BMW M440i Gran Coupe will have a 3.0 liter turbocharged I6 under the hood that produces 382 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, just like its two-door sister. The M440i Gran Coupe’s engine is a mild hybrid, just like the coupe’s, and it has a 48-volt starter generator that also doubles as a tiny electric motor and can provide an additional 11 horsepower in electric assistance. The engine gets a boost under acceleration and responds more quickly off the line or at low rpms as a result of this gain in efficiency and power.
For the M440i, this engine is coupled to a well-known eight-speed automatic transmission and will only provide power to an xDrive all-wheel drive system. BMW claims that the M440i Gran Coupe can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds, although it wouldn’t come as a surprise if it were quicker in practice. Of course, the maximum speed is 155 mph. On the M440i, a limited-slip differential with electronic control is also standard.
The BMW 420d Gran Coupe has a four-cylinder diesel engine with 190 horsepower. The 420d GC will accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 7.3 seconds thanks to its 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. Maximum speed is 235 km/h (146 mph).
Similar to the 4 Series Gran Coupe models with conventional engines, the Munich facility also produces the BMW i4 electric vehicle, which has up to 530 horsepower. On the other side, the Dingolfing facility produces the BMW 4 Series Convertible (G23) and the two-door 4 Series Coupe (G22).

Production of the latest generation BMW 4-Series Coupe has begun at the Dingolfing plant in Germany.
As the rollout of all five models began at the same time, the redesigned 5-Series Sedan, 5-Series Touring, M5, and 6-Series GT joined the premium sports coupe on the assembly line. According to Christoph Schroder, the factory’s manager, “launching production of five models at once demands careful planning and tremendous concentration across the entire operation.”
We were able to release the new 4-Series Coupe, 5-Series, and 6-Series Gran Turismo on schedule and with the greatest level of quality despite the brief stoppage of production and one-shift restarting under coronavirus conditions.
The 2021 4-Series Coupe will go on sale this fall, with prices starting at $46,595 in the US and EUR45,800 ($51,425) in Germany. The 369 HP M440i xDrive will be offered, along with two four-cylinder petrol variants and a four-cylinder diesel option, initially in Europe. Two more six-cylinder inline oil burners will eventually be added to the lineup, beginning in March 2021. The M440i xDrive described earlier and the 258 HP 430i, both offered as 430i xDrive, will be part of the vehicle built to U.S. specifications.
The BMW Group owns 31 production facilities worldwide, with the largest one being at Dingolfing, Germany, where 1,500 3-, 4-, 5-, 6-, 7-, and 8-Series vehicles are produced daily. The factory, which will also be in charge of producing the iNext electric vehicle starting in 2021, assembled over 285,000 vehicles last year.
With over 800 apprentices in 15 different occupations, the Lower Bavarian location is the company’s largest training facility and is home to almost 18,000 people. In addition to the aforementioned BMW automobiles, Dingolfing also produces the bodywork for all Rolls-Royce models. The facility is also in charge of producing various components, chassis, and drive systems.

- USA: Spartanburg This single line plant produces the X5 and Z4 and was recently renovated. The X6 will also be produced here when it is ready to be built. Along with the X1 that has been planned, the upcoming X3 will join the other “X” models here (which may be built in Germany, sources are unclear).

What factory makes BMW engines?
Franklin — As part of a bigger transition to low-emission vehicles, BMW said it will retool its German facilities to make electric cars and components and move combustion engine production to operations in England and Austria.
By the end of 2022, all of BMW’s German plants will produce at least one fully electric vehicle, according to board member Milan Nedeljkovic, who is in charge of production at the company.

Which engine powers the BMW 4 Series?
The 4-series is equipped with the same two overachieving engines that are provided in the 3-series. A 255-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine powers models with the designation 430i. A smooth-running 3.0-liter inline-six turbocharged engine that receives assistance from a 48-volt hybrid system to produce 382-hp powers the M440i. Thanks to a modified suspension, more aggressive steering calibration, a wider rear track, and a lower center of gravity than the 3-series sedan, the 4-series offers a dynamic driving experience. Nevertheless, the M440i coupe we tested left us less enamored with its driving characteristics than its fantastic inline-six.
