Over 1.4 million light vehicles were produced by German manufacturers in NAFTA in 2017, a record number and an 11% rise from the year before. 56% of such vehicles were produced in American factories, while 44% were produced in Mexico, where about 620,000 vehicles were produced, with 461,248 of those coming from the Volkswagen plant and 158,550 from the Audi plant.
The only two German manufacturers with factories in Mexico are Volkswagen and Audi, both of which are located in Puebla. By the end of the year, Mercedes-Benz is anticipated to enter the Mexican automotive hub with the construction of a joint factory in Aguascalientes with Nissan’s high-end brand Infiniti. Additionally, the assembly factory in San Luis Potosi that is now under development will start producing BMW vehicles in 2019.
According to Wissmann, 803,000 light automobiles were produced in the United States by German OEMs in 2017, a 6% decrease. Additionally, the overall U.S. output decreased 8% to 11 million units in 2017.
The official emphasized the significance of German automakers in U.S. exports by pointing out that 54% of the vehicles made in the U.S. by German manufacturers—roughly 430,000 units—are exported to Europe, Asia, and the rest of the world. Of the vehicles made in the U.S. by German manufacturers, 40% are sold in the U.S., 6% are purchased by customers in the other two NAFTA nations.
As a result, Wissmann continued, “our proportion of all U.S. exports (of light vehicles) amounts to nearly one fourth, three times as much as our part of the U.S. market.”
Wissmann pointed out that among the top five export destinations for German-made automobiles, the United States continues to rank second. Germany sold around 500,000 light automobiles to the United States in 2017. In fact, the United States is Germany’s top export market for passenger vehicles, light trucks, and supply goods in terms of value.
Exports from Germany have, however, been declining as a result of the German automakers’ years-long strategic expansion of their U.S. output. The decrease from 2013 to 2017 amounts to a quarter, or over 160,000 light cars.
Over 36,000 employees are employed by German OEMs in the US. At German automotive suppliers, there are an additional 80,000 workers. This high employment rate is the result of the suppliers’ customers including both non-German OEMs and American and NAFTA-based producers in addition to German OEMs.
Since the end of the 1990s, German suppliers have tripled the number of their NAFTA facilities to over 430, and alone in the United States, there are now more than 270 facilities.
