One of the world’s most cutting-edge and environmentally friendly automotive plants is the BMW Group facility in Leipzig. March 2005 saw the start of the series’ production. Today, almost 1,000 vehicles, including the BMW 1 Series, BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, and BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, leave this factory each day. More than three billion euros have already been invested in the Leipzig area by the BMW Group. There are now 5,300 people working in the core workforce. BMW 1 Series
Since 2004, BMW has been producing a line of C-segment subcompact executive automobiles under the name BMW 1 Series. It is presently in its third generation and is the replacement for the BMW 3 Series Compact. The first generation, which served as the entry-level model in the BMW product line, was made in hatchback, coupe, and convertible body types.
Since 2014, the coupe and convertible versions have been sold independently under the 2 Series brand, therefore both body types are no longer part of the 1 Series lineup. 2017 saw the release of a four-door sedan for the Chinese market, which was built on the same front-wheel drive architecture as the third-generation 1 Series hatchback.
The first generation featured the BMW 1 Series M Coupe, a high-performance BMW M variant. The 1 Series M Coupe was replaced by the BMW M2 in 2016 as a result of the 1 Series coupe type being replaced by the 2 Series.
The 1 Series has been rear-wheel driven for its first two incarnations, although all-wheel drive has been an available feature since 2012. The 1 Series’ third generation, which debuted in 2019, switched to a front-wheel drive configuration while keeping the all-wheel drive option.
This blue 118i with the sport option is the first vehicle.
BMW has been in the headlines quite a bit recently as the manufacturer updates its lineup across the board, from the entry-level 1 Series to the facelifted 7 Series, plus that crazy X7 pickup truck one-off. The Mercedes A-Class and Audi A3 rival has begun series production after the German carmaker unveiled a brand-new, front-wheel-drive-based 1er at the end of May.
The redesigned 1 Series is just one of eight models built at the Leipzig factory in Germany, which also produces the compact hatchback’s first and second generations with rear-wheel drive. The 2 Series Coupe and Convertible, the faster M2 Competition, and the family-friendly 2 Series Active Tourer minivan are all assembled at the same plant by BMW. In addition to these standard models, Leipzig also produces the electric i3 and plug-in hybrid i8 coupe and roadster. The production rate overall impressively tops 1,000 units each day.
The new 1 Series F40 has begun production at the BMW plant in Leipzig.
The replacement with a front-wheel drive platform has started its manufacturing cycle in Leipzig right after the BMW 1 Series F20’s production cycle comes to an end. The bar is conceivably high for the first BMW 1 Series with front-wheel drive because 1,248,737 units of the second generation were produced. The Munich executives are nonetheless certain that the new BMW 1 Series F40 would meet its clients’ tastes. The third generation of the 1 Series does away with the three-door model in addition to the front-wheel drive update.
The Misano Blue 118i with the M Sport package is the first BMW 1 Series F40 to leave the factory. The top model M135i xDrive is also depicted in a few of the pictures below. Production in Leipzig will increase in the upcoming months to about 600 automobiles per day. The Regensburg factory will begin producing the 1 Series F40 starting in November, greatly enhancing its capacity.
In addition to the BMW 1 Series F40, the Leipzig plant also produces the 2 Series Coupe, including the M2 Competition, the 2 Series Convertible, the 2 Series Active Tourer, as well as the i3, i8, and i8 Roadsters. Currently, a little over a thousand cars depart the factory each day. In addition, with an estimated 300 million euros spent in the facility, serial manufacturing of the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe will start in November. As a result, production capacity will increase to 350,000 units annually in 2020 from the current 250,000 units.
Hans-Peter Kemser, Director of the BMW Leipzig Plant “For all of us at the Leipzig plant, producing the new BMW 1 Series in series is a really meaningful event. In the upcoming years, the 1 Series will significantly contribute to our plant’s continued high capacity utilization. In-depth planning for the new model has dominated the past few months. Our workers were able to demonstrate their proficiency in the manufacture of vehicles with the BMW front-wheel drive architecture with the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer.”
What is the conclusion?
Although BMW has switched to front-wheel drive, the 1 Series hasn’t suffered (too much) as a result.
Three generations later, we have the answer to the question of when, not if, the 1 Series would switch to front-wheel drive. The good news? It doesn’t suffer as a result, continuing to be an expert in its field. Simply said, the product has become more generic.
Although the entry-level models may be stronger than the more performance-focused ones, it rides even better and handles well regardless of the specifications. especially for those in the back seats, who stand to gain the most from the 1 Series’ move to front-drive and transverse engines.
A separate temperature control panel and BMW’s outstanding Live Cockpit Professional system, which includes a dual 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and infotainment display, are now standard on every 1 Series. That’s as solid a justification as any to choose one over the Mk8 Golf.
What factory makes BMW engines?
Franklin — As part of a bigger transition to low-emission vehicles, BMW said it will retool its German facilities to make electric cars and components and move combustion engine production to operations in England and Austria.
By the end of 2022, all of BMW’s German plants will produce at least one fully electric vehicle, according to board member Milan Nedeljkovic, who is in charge of production at the company.
