When Is BMW 4 Series Redesign?

UPCOMING STAGE: Refresh in 2024

2020 saw the facelift of the 4 Series coupe and convertible, and the mild-hybrid 48-volt system was added to the six-cylinder engine version. In the second half of 2024, the line should receive a midcycle refresh, just like the 3 Series did.

Last year, the four-door Gran Coupe had a facelift that includes stronger engines and aerodynamic advancements. A 503-hp, M xDrive all-wheel-drive M4 Competition Convertible with a makeover debuted last year.

The BMW 4 Series Coupe Deserves This Redesign, According to a 2022 Rendering

The massive “nose” grilles from the 4 Series should be the only thing BMW could bring back.

The new generation BMW 4 Series was introduced in 2021, and while practically everything about it was flawless, BMW has received harsh criticism for the enormous kidney grilles. We have great hopes for the 4 Series’ revised appearance because the Bavarian auto giant modified the 3 Series sedan models in May 2022 without adopting the wider grille design. We now have an understanding of what we want—the traditional smaller kidney grilles with an aggressive front-end styling—thanks to X-Tomi Designs.

What has changed for 2023?

For 2023, BMW’s entry-luxury coupe and convertible are substantially unchanged, although the optional Shadowline design package now includes M Sport brakes with red or blue calipers. BMW’s gimmicky gesture controls for the infotainment system are no longer included in the Premium package, and the optional head-up display is now only offered on the highest-spec M440i cars. All versions now get a faux-leather dashboard cover, and the options list now includes a Parking Assistance package.

Now a J.D. Power Engineering Award winner, the 2021 BMW 4 Series

J.D. Power & Associates is still operating strong, conducting studies, and bestowing prizes despite the sad passing of its eponymous founder. Its Quality, Dependability, and Reliability Awards are probably recognizable to you; winning businesses frequently (and properly) brag about them in ads. However, J.D. Power also presents Excellence in Engineering Awards, which is the full title of the award.

Even though the J.D. Power Awards are slightly different, they nonetheless honor excellence and dependability. You know the saying, “Never buy an automobile in its first year after it has been redesigned or completely new?” That isn’t inherently poor counsel, though. Glitches, defects, and other quality-control concerns sometimes accompany the introduction of a completely new or drastically altered car. However, occasionally nothing mishaps; there are no haphazard manufacturing defects, hiccups, etc. And J.D. Power recognizes that by, well, giving out Engineering Awards.

However, when awarding its Engineering Awards, J.D. Power doesn’t just focus on initial quality. To essentially gauge how much owners enjoy its new cars, it also conducts the Automotive Performance, Execution, and Layout (APEAL) Study. And this takes into account everything, including the drivetrain, the infotainment system, and, yes, overall appearance.

The Highest-Rated New Vehicle and the Highest-Rated Vehicle Redesign are the two Engineering Awards given out by J.D. Power. The first one was won by the Genesis GV80. And the latter was just awarded to the 2021 BMW 4 Series for its upgrades over its predecessor.

Could the “coffin” grille on the BMW 4 Series finally be laid to rest?

BMW enthusiasts want the BMW 4 Series’ oversized upright grille, which is claimed to resemble two coffins, to be redesigned when the facelift debuts the following year. We’ve now seen an example of what it might look like.

One well-known online artist has suggested a return to a smaller and more conventional “kidney” grille for the 2023 BMW 4 Series, which is anticipated to receive a facelift the following year.

When the second-generation 4 Series went on sale in June 2020, BMW garnered attention for its enormous upright “coffin grille.”

Some BMW enthusiasts adored it, while others said it looked like a pair of coffins or gopher’s teeth.

Adrian van Hooydonk, vice president of group design at BMW, said to Autocar in February 2021, “We deal with [social media criticism] in the same way we do with customer clinics.”

“Because the individual remarks might be fairly harsh, I never visit certain clinics. It’s not always fun, though.”

Unfounded claims now coming out of Japan indicate that the big grille may be removed when the redesigned BMW 4 Series goes on sale the following year.

Famous Photoshop auto artist X-Tomi Design has morphed the front end of the recently facelifted 3 Series onto today’s 4 Series in an image initially published by Japanese journal Spyder7, previewing a more traditional style that is evocative of BMW coupes from past years.

At this point, it is unknown if BMW will respond to criticism from some fans by switching to a more traditional grille for the BMW 4 Series facelift or maintain its original design.

Perhaps BMW might compromise and keep the coffin grilles on the M3 and M4 high-performance variants, where additional engine cooling is required and bold design is frequently admired, while returning to a more traditional appearance on the standard versions of the BMW 4 Series.

In any case, we’re still in awe of X-prowess Tomi’s with computers, creativity, and attention to detail.

Therefore, it makes plausible that BMW will reintroduce a completely new 4-series Gran Coupe in 2022. This car aims to be a hybrid that combines the greatest features of both the 3-series sedan and the 2-door 4-series coupe.

The objective is to increase rear passenger accessibility and space without sacrificing the driving experience that BMW’s renown brings.

The Gran Coupe delivers thanks to its two potent engine choices, which is crucial in the fiercely competitive luxury automobile market.

I recently had the opportunity to get behind the wheel of a 2022 BMW 430i Gran Coupe, and now I can give you a detailed assessment of whether it succeeds in keeping its high level of driving performance while gaining in functionality.

LOOKS

The enormous kidney-style grille that has caused such a rift among enthusiasts is the focal point of the BMW 4-series’ 2021 makeover. It’s gaining a lot of attention whether people adore it or despise it to the core.

Personally, I believe it’s a brave statement made by BMW that distinguishes the 4-series in the luxury market.

When I was driving the 4-series, I received numerous remarks on its gorgeous overall exterior design. When seated motionless, it appeared to move very quickly, which is accurate.

The 4-series’ interior is exquisitely crafted, exuding an air of speed and luxury. However, you’ll need to treat the back seat as a storage space because no one will be sitting there if someone tall is seated in the front. Additionally, the trunk space is constrained.

Beautiful Portimao Blue color and black leather inside seats with blue embroidery were both features of my test car. The infotainment system’s controls and design were excellent, lovely, and simple to operate.

The Premium package adds a heated steering wheel, keyless entry, lumbar support, heated front seats, ambient lighting, a head-up display, and other features. It also features power folding and heated side mirrors.

4 Series BMW (G22)

The compact executive cars in the second generation of the BMW 4 Series include the BMW G22 (coupe version), BMW G23 (convertible version), and BMW G26 (saloon variant, marketed as the Gran Coupe). The G22 4 Series, which replaces the F32 4 Series, was introduced in June 2020.

The G22 will be produced alongside the G20 3 Series and has several features in common with it. The G22/G23/G26 will be powered by turbocharged gasoline and diesel engines, just like the G20 3 Series series. In order to distinguish between the two models and elevate the 4 Series, the new 4 Series deviates significantly from the 3 Series in terms of design. The huge kidney grille at the front, which was modeled after the BMW 328 from the 1930s, is the most noticeable of the design alterations.

When was the BMW 4 Series updated?

The following body types make up the first generation of the 4 Series:

  • a two-door coupe (F32 model code)
  • convertible two-door (F33 model code)
  • a liftback four-door (F36 model code; marketed as the 4 Series Gran Coupe)

Since it began to be produced in 2014, this generation has gone by the moniker “F32.” The E92/E93 coupe/convertible versions of the fifth-generation 3 Series lineup were replaced by the F32. The F32 is produced alongside the F30 3 Series and has several features in common with it. The F32/F33/F36 are powered by turbocharged petrol and diesel engines with 3 cylinders (petrol only), 4 cylinders, and 6 cylinders, just like the F30 3 Series line.

Early in 2014, the F82/F83 M4 versions with strong performance were released. They are propelled by an S55 straight-six turbocharged engine.

Is the 4 Series being phased out by BMW?

Due to people’s apparent shift away from less practical vehicles, demand for coupes and convertibles has decreased in recent years. Ask Mercedes, please. Along with the S-Class Coupe and Convertible, it also made the decision to eliminate the AMG GT Roadster and the baby SLC. Additionally, it’s widely assumed that the two-door C-Class and E-Class models will combine to become the CLE model line.

What’s this? If we were to believe a recent claim from the Australian magazine WhichCar, BMW may be following suit. The 4 Series Coupe & Convertible and the 8 Series Coupe & Convertible, according to the journalists, won’t last into another generation. Instead, it appears that starting in 2026, the two families will combine to form the 6 Series lineup.

Is a new BMW 4 Series on the way?

The 2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is 5.9 inches longer, 1 inch wider, and 2.1 inches taller than the model it replaces, while the front and rear tracks have expanded by 1.6 inches and 0.7 inches, respectively. The wheelbase has been extended by 1.8 inches.

The 2022 BMW 4 Series is made where?

BMW 4 Series vehicles are also made at the BMW Group Munich Plant. However, Munich is the only place where the BMW 3 Series Touring, BMW 4 Series Coupe, and M4 Coupe are produced.

Are sales of the new BMW 4 Series strong?

Over the past few years, BMW has primarily faced criticism for its enormous beaver-toothed grille. The trend was started by vehicles like the BMW X7 and 7 Series facelift, which also drew some criticism. However, the much smaller 4 Series, followed by the BMW M3 and M4, is when the criticism truly got out of hand. So much so that it’s given rise to a notion that BMW may change the face of the 4 Series with its impending facelift, according to the Japanese website Speed7. But such rumors will probably turn out to be little more than that.

Social media would have you believe that since the release of its unique new grille, BMW sales are in freefall. But that’s simply not the case. In reality, 7,379 beaver-grilled BMWs have found homes in America, making the 4 Series one of BMW’s best-selling vehicles thus far this year. The 3 Series, which has long been the mainstay of the brand, is the only other non-SUV BMW to sell more than that. Additionally, those 4 Series numbers reflect a 54.2% rise over Q1 of last year, demonstrating that customers are beginning to accept this new grille style.

Though not the only toothy Bimmer to do well in sales is the 4 Series. The huge grille from the 4 Series is used on the BMW M3 and M4, which are both selling well. In reality, the BMW M Division had its biggest sales year ever in 2018, selling 163,542 vehicles, a 13% increase from the year before. Although BMW M withheld exact sales data, the fact that the M3 and M4 were the only new M vehicles in 2022 suggests that both vehicles played a significant role in BMW M’s recent success.

Following the recent publication of a render showing the 4 Series with the new 3 Series facelift’s grille, there have been rumors that BMW may modify the 4 Series grille with its next facelift. Numerous people praised the render’s updated appearance and more logically sized grille, which made some fans think that BMW might actually try to implement the alteration. But given how well its automobiles are selling, there is just no evidence to support that.

In addition to the success of the 4 Series, M3, and M4, BMW is also attempting to avoid the same-sausage-different-length dilemma in its portfolio. BMW appears to be doing this by separating the 4 Series from the 3 Series with a large grille. There is a remote chance that this rumor is accurate, as there is with all rumors. Though nothing is impossible, it seems incredibly improbable that BMW will modify anything anytime soon.
