The inline six-cylinder turbo-diesel engine in the X5 xDrive40d produces 630Nm of torque and 230kW of power. The 40d’s engine is the same as the one in the 30d, but it has been modified to produce 40kW/70Nm more.
The X5 works well with this engine. With a 0-100km/h pace of 5.9 seconds, it has lots of shove and a deep, harsh sound. Want to arrive sooner? The V8 petrol xDrive50i roars in in 4.9 seconds, while the X5 M50d diesel completes the task in 5.3 seconds.
While towing a trailer, you might not be able to reach those 0-100 km/h timings, but the xDrive40d offers a 2700 kg braked towing capability.
The petrol electric hybrid xDrive40e (see my evaluation of this one), which is primarily for urban fighters with daily access to charging, seems to me to make much more sense if you are covering serious kays. The xDrive40d is thirsty, then. Find out by reading on.

The 30d (254 bhp) and 40d (309 bhp) models with 3.0-liter, six-cylinder diesel engines follow. For those who still need more power, there is also a 50i petrol model with a 443 horsepower 5.0-liter V8 and an M50d diesel with 376 bhp.
BMW debuted a 567 horsepower, 4.2 second, 0-62 mph X5 M in 2014. The xDrive40e plug-in hybrid, which was introduced in 2015 and combines a 2.0-liter gasoline engine with an electric motor to provide an electric-only range of around 15 miles, is at the other extreme of the spectrum.
The X5’s interior space is another noteworthy aspect. Although shoulder room is a little tight for three persons sitting abreast, the level floor does at least ensure they won’t be fighting for foot space. Two tall adults may ride in the back without any problems.
There is no loading lip or wheel arch intrusions, and the boot is enormous. Customers may also choose a third row of seats for all models except the X5 M and xDrive40e, with the additional two seats folding out of the boot floor. They offer another weapon to the X5’s arsenal even though they are truly only appropriate for toddlers.
In an effort to reclaim the title from luxury SUV heavyweights like the Audi Q7 and the Range Rover Sport, the third-generation X5 was ultimately replaced in 2018 by an entirely new and improved vehicle. This new fourth-generation X5 calls on its traditional virtues as the key to its undeniable success. What distinguishes the BMW X3 20d and 30d?
The X3 20d employs BMW’s 2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine, as suggested by their model designations, while the X3 30d is equipped with a 3-litre inline-six turbodiesel. How potent is the BMW X5?
Three different powertrains, each connected with a different model, are available for the 2023 X5. X5s with the sDrive40i or xdrive40i badge are equipped with a 335-hp inline-six turbocharger. A turbocharged inline-six and an electric motor provide the plug-in hybrid xDrive45e a combined 389 horsepower. That engine propelled an X5 to 60 mph on our test track in just 4.7 seconds. (We also tried the 40i, which completed a sprint to 60 mph in in 4.8 seconds.) Last but not least, the M50i can go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds thanks to its 523 horsepower twin-turbo V-8. An eight-speed automatic transmission is mated to each of the three powertrains, and none of them will leave drivers lacking for acceleration in almost any situation. The X5’s smooth ride, secure handling, and improved steering—which feels more connected and direct but is still not quite what we’d call sporting—are all significant upgrades over the previous generation model. Although it’s a close race, the Audi Q7 still beats the X5 in this department. When you throw the X5 into a sharp turn, it maintains its grip with ease and rewards the driver with a level of predictability that is lacking in the GLE-class. And if you need to tow, be aware that the X5 has a strong 7200 pounds of maximum towing capacity, regardless of the engine it has.

With the launch of 48V mild-hybrid technology, BMW has announced a number of engine changes that will be available starting in July of this year. These updates are expected to increase economy and performance across 37 model lines. These packages will be added to the 14 mild-hybrid ones that are already on the market.
Mild hybrid systems are becoming more and more common in modern cars, especially those from European manufacturers. The technology used by BMW is composed of a 48-volt starter-generator that is linked to a different battery that can store electricity produced while braking. After that, this energy can be used to support the vehicle’s electronic systems while also supplying an additional 8kW of motor power.
The ’30d’ engine, which is offered in these model lines: the 7 Series, X3 and X4, X5 and X6, and the SUV’s top-of-the-line X7, may have received the most widespread modification. The 30d now produces 195kW and 620Nm with a 3.0-liter inline-six single-turbo-diesel engine with TwinPower technology (variable geometry turbine).
In addition to the mild-hybrid technology, BMW has for the first time installed a new multi-stage turbo system in the 30d. The low-pressure stage of the system continues to use variable turbine geometry. Additionally, a new common rail direct injection system with piezo injectors that can operate at up to 2700 pressure is installed.
These changes have increased the power output to an astounding 210kW. The torque number is also increased to 650Nm and is distributed between 1500 and 2500 rpm as opposed to 620Nm in the outgoing unit between 2000 and 2500 rpm. All of this translates to better performance. For instance, BMW claims that the revised 730d sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, as opposed to 6.1 seconds previously. Sprint times should be reduced by 0.2 seconds across all 30d model lines.
In addition to producing more power, the new configuration also enhances fuel efficiency and lowers pollutants. For instance, the X5 xDrive30d currently delivers average fuel consumption and emissions of 5.7–6.2L/100km and 150–164g/km, respectively. These numbers are lower than the previous values of 6.0-6.7L/100km and 158-175g/km.
The outputs climb from 240kW and 680Nm to an astounding 250kW and 700Nm when upgrading to the twin-turbo 40d version of the same engine, which is offered as the 740d, the X3 M40d, and the X7 xDrive40d (all not presently available in Australia). In the case of the 740d xDrive, the improvements result in a 0.2-second decline in 0-100 km/h, from 5.2 to 5.0 seconds. The upgraded 30d and 40d both comply with Euro 6d emissions regulations.
In addition, starting in the middle of 2020, BMW will make a number of other updates and modifications to a variety of models. The 3 Series now offers enhanced Active Navigation Guidance and Emergency Lane Assistant as part of the optional Driving Assistant Professional pack, and many other models are happy that both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are now available.

This means that two turbochargers are positioned within the engine’s “V” and contribute to its powerful 617 horsepower and 750 Nm of torque. The eight-speed M Steptronic transmission transfers the power, and the M Competition reaches 62 mph in in 3.8 seconds.
