Soren Kjeldsen and Viktor Hovland are tied for the lead going into Sunday’s third and final round of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.
Following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday, the championship event for the DP World Tour was shortened to 54 holes and did not take place on Friday.
Players, officials, and fans observed a two-minute moment of silence before the event resumed on Saturday morning. They also wore black ribbons throughout their second rounds as a mark of respect for the king.
After play resumed, it was an excellent day, with soft conditions and quiet winds making low scoring the norm.
In search of his first victory since the Irish Open in 2015, Kjeldsen of Denmark shot an outstanding eight-under 68 to seize the clubhouse lead at 12-under. Hovland, who was tied for the lead after the first round, also shot a 68 in the afternoon to join him.
After second-round 65s, Rory McIlroy, Rafa Cabrera Bello, and Thomas Detry are only one stroke behind. McIlroy matched his best round at Wentworth by making an eagle and five birdies, giving himself a strong chance to win a second BMW PGA championship.
Along with Shane Lowry, Matt Jordan, and Francesco Molinari, LIV Golfers Talor Gooch and Adrian Otaegui are among the players just two shots back on 10-under par.
The best round of the day was turned in by Min Woo Lee, who shot a 10-under par 62. If the Australian hadn’t bogeyed the par-5 17th hole and then missed his eagle putt on the 18th, it may have been even better.
The leaders after the first round, Tommy Fleetwood and Andy Sullivan, shot scores of 73 and 72, respectively, which were both one over par.
Billy Horschel, the defending champion, is four shots down in the race for consecutive victories.
The Ryder Cup qualification process for Luke Donald’s team began this week, giving European players an additional incentive to win on Sunday in addition to the Rolex Series competition.
Callum Shinkwin and Ian Poulter, two Englishmen, will start the action at 7:05 a.m. on Sunday. The top 65 players and ties advanced to the final round.
At 2.40 p.m., Kjeldsen and Hovland will begin their rounds as the penultimate pair.
