BMW Oil Filter Cap Engine Oil Filter 32mm Socket.
In This Article...
Hey there, I was curious if anyone was aware of the oil filter housing’s socket size. To unscrew it, I’ve been using an adjustable wrench and/or vice grips, but life would be simpler if it were a straightforward socket that I could just remove. The largest I have is a 21mm, but I believe it to be more like a 27mm. Just wanted to make sure before placing an order. Thank you,
In the past ten years or so, BMW has employed two to three different oil filter wrenches. The 328d is plainly using a different wrench than gassers, who use a large 3″–4″ item, and not many people own one.
I’m not sure what size was utilized in my old E46 330xi because I no longer have the vehicle. Since we now reside in a condo and are unable to perform maintenance in the garage, I have not checked or changed the oil on my wife’s 328xd, which is still covered by warranty. Nor would I likely do so.
Have you ever considered simply going to Autozone or another location that sells sockets and asking for a few to be fitted?
You’re fairly near, in my opinion, with 27mm. I think I utilized that the last time I changed my oil. Maybe a 28mm camera… Can’t quite recall.
I just received a notification from CBS a few days ago, so I’ll be changing it this week.
Today, my wife rode the bus or walked. It took me ten minutes to check (down the elevator, unlock my car to obtain the locker keys, open my wife’s car, take the cover off and test a few sockets, and then go back through the process).
How big is the oil filter socket?

Apply a thin layer of fresh engine oil to the replacement filter’s gasket before manually threading it on. For ease of turning, some filters include a rubberized surface. Unless your filter is one of those deeply recessed models with no room for your hands, you don’t need a wrench. (In that scenario, a cap wrench is the only option.) Turn the filter until the mounting plate of the filter feels barely in touch with the filter base. Then turn the screw a further half turn with the wrench.
