The flagship of The Players
The most prominent competition on the European Tour is the BMW PGA Championship. The British Professional Golfers’ Association launched it in 1955, and it was first called as the British PGA Championship. Before finding a permanent home on the West Course at Wentworth Club in 1984, the championship alternated between a number of Britain’s top courses and is now recognized as the signature event on the European Tour.
Since 2005, the event has grown steadily under the sponsorship of BMW, and many players have compared the atmosphere to that of major championships.
There are several past winners of the BMW PGA Championship, some of whom have won the event more than once. Colin Montgomerie is the only player to have won the trophy three years in a row; Sir Nick Faldo, a former world No. 1, won it four times (1998,1999 and 2000). Other winners include legendary photographers like Severiano Ballesteros, Ian Woosnam, Jose Maria Olazabal, Bernhard Langer (1987, 1993, 1995), and others.
Englishman Ken Bousfield became the first champion at the Pannal Golf Club in northern England, while Italian Matteo Manassero, 20, became the championship’s youngest winner in a three-man play-off in 2013. Arnold Palmer, who won at Royal St George’s in 1975, was the only American to hold the title. A victory grants a three-year exemption for the Open Championship, the oldest and most prestigious of all the majors, as well as automatic entrance for the US Open competition that year.
