It may appear that BMW has lost its way and is now producing SUVs rather than the compact sports sedans and coupes we’ve come to know and love as its portfolio expands and SUVs gain importance. But when you truly examine the data, you can see some positive trends for true BMW fans.
The 3 Series and 4 Series were BMW’s best-selling models last year, with the company selling 490,969 units of each. The X3/X4 siblings, which sold roughly 414,000 vehicles, were the next best-selling BMWs, with about 76,000 more units sold. A 16 percent rise in sales over the prior year may be seen in the 490,000 3 Series/4 Series vehicles sold.
The 5 Series/6 Series (326,212), the X1/X2 (311,928), and the 1 Series/2 Series were the models that came after the BMW 3 Series/4 Series and X3/X4 and X3/X4 (265,964). Interestingly, despite the BMW iX/i3/i8 and Z4 going out of production, the Z4 (14,778) had even less sales than the dead-last BMW vehicle.
The BMW 3 Series and 4 Series are small-ish, sporty sedans and coupes that are meant to be the company’s mainstays. The 2002 BMW was the vehicle that established the firm as what it is today. It is now a 3 Series corporation because the 3er is the logical replacement for the original 2002. Something would be amiss if the 3 Series and its 4 Series brothers weren’t the brand’s best-selling model.
A further surprise is that the 3 Series and 4 Series models together accounted for the majority of 2021’s BMW sales. Currently, SUVs rule the market, and the BMW X3/X4 would have been my first visitor. However, it’s tremendously exciting to see the BMW 3 Series take the lead for the brand and that in 2021, the 3 Series was preferred by more people globally than the X3. especially when vehicles like the Tesla Model 3 are stealing BMW customers.
The following year, sales for BMW should also increase. The BMW 3 Series is going to receive its LCI facelift, which will include some design, interior, and maybe technological modifications to keep the 3er current until this generation completes its life cycle.

Data & Trends for BMW Sales in the US Automotive Market
Until Mercedes-Benz overtook BMW in 2013, BMW was the best-selling premium brand in the US in 2011, 2012, 2014, and 2015. Prior to it, Lexus had held the crown for 11 straight years. From 2016 to 2018, Mercedes had reclaimed the top spot, but in 2019, BMW came back strongly to recover the position.
With the exception of the compact X1, BMW presently assembles all of its crossovers and SUVs at Spartanburg, South Carolina, where it has been producing automobiles since 1994. The facility is the second-largest by volume for the company. It imports its additional models for the US market from Europe.
For a long time, the BMW 3 series and 4 series midsized sedan, coupe, and convertible were the brand’s best-selling vehicles in the US. However, in 2019, the X3 compact SUV won that honor as the proportion of crossovers in BMW’s US sales climbed steadily from just under 22% in 2010 to 58% in 2019.
With 44,442 units sold in 2019, the United States is the largest market for BMW M sports vehicles.
Series
BMW’s small sedan is called the 3 Series. Since its introduction in 1976, it has stood out, and it is currently BMW’s best-selling car overall. For the 2019 model year, the new seventh-generation was introduced; in the US market, BMW discontinued the wagon and gran turismo body types as well as the manual transmission. It is offered in 255 horsepower four-cylinder, 288 horsepower plug-in hybrid, and 382-horsepower six-cylinder models. This year saw the debut of the new M3, which had an inline-six turbocharged with 473 or 503 horsepower.

The Covid-19 outbreak undoubtedly had an impact on the German manufacturer, but according to BMW executive Marc Cohen, the automaker’s operations were what made them stand out in the first half of the year.
Cohen told reporters that despite the reduced or limited production, “it’s not stopping like some of these other companies.” “Cars being delivered now were ordered by clients two months ago since inventory is restricted.” SUVs are said to be delivered by the company’s domestic assembly factory in Spartanburg, South Carolina, in six to eight weeks rather than the three months it takes for vehicles to arrive from Germany. Additionally, the automaker’s operations in South Carolina and San Luis Potosi, Mexico, have not been harmed by the chip shortfall, according to data from researcher AutoForecast Solutions.
In 2020, the marque’s Spartanburg plant was shut down for many weeks due to a lack of parts, but things have been different this year. The company’s in-house produced X3 compact crossover, which sold 21,285 units in the second quarter for a 125 percent rise, was the best-selling model for BMW. In the meantime, sales of the X5 SUV are up 94% year over year, and those of the 3 Series sedan are up 86%.
It’s safe to assume that BMW’s production method, which appears to have protected it from the brunt of the chip scarcity, is effective even though it hasn’t been made public.

BMW’s best-selling model, the 3 Series, accounts for about 30% of the brand’s annual total sales. The BMW 3 Series has garnered numerous accolades over its existence, partly because of its ability to strike a balance between being an everyday vehicle with great performance attributes and added luxury. For instance, the 3 Series has been on the annual Ten Best list of Car and Driver magazine 22 times, from 1992 through 2014, making it the list’s longest-running entry. The M3 is one of our favorite vehicles of all time, which helps because we at GoodCarBadCar are automotive junkies. The BMW 3 Series was ranked as the second-most significant performance vehicle produced during the past 25 years by Motorsports magazine, but the marque has struggled more lately as volume has decreased in recent years.
