A more powerful and lighter variant of the sports sedan is the 2022 BMW M5 CS. It is reported to weigh 230 pounds less and have 627 horsepower.

2022 BMW M5 CS Puts in a Workout
When it comes to removing weight from their vehicles, the majority of automakers are happy with a few grams here and there. We were therefore dubious when BMW stated that the new M5 CS would weigh 230 pounds less than the 4243-pound M5 Competition. The scales don’t lie, as our tech department and bariatric doctors like to assert. The CS registered 4096 pounds during the weigh-in, which is 147 pounds less than the Competition. Though not quite the outcome expected, this was nonetheless a significant step in the right direction.
The normal M5’s carbon-fiber roof and a carbon-fiber hood help shed weight, but the M3’s lightweight racing-style front seats and removal of sound-dampening material account for the majority of the reduction. Though, the CS is still quiet, measuring a low 66 dB at 70 mph, matching a 2018 M5 we tested on the same surface. This suggests that BMW didn’t take off all the stops.
HIGHS: While still being as sophisticated as the standard M5, this M5 is lighter and more enjoyable.
BMW extracted 10 more horsepower from the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 of the Competition to make the most of the lightweight M5. The ZF eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive on the M5 CS enable it to reach 60 mph in 2.6 seconds and reach a quarter-mile speed of 130 mph in 10.6 seconds while producing 627 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. The transmission blasts off shifts and demonstrates its dedication in the most race-car-like manner as it automatically shifts into the appropriate gear while braking to provide you with the gear you need for the bend.
There is also no charge for the Pirelli P Zero Corsa PZC4s. The Corsas are probably to blame for the clearer and overall more steering feedback. Even though the weight drop is fantastic, the driving experience isn’t entirely altered. If you put these tough tires on an M5 Competition, it should feel equivalent like cutting out marzipan from your diet. However, you would be without the CS’s updated dampers. The most severe damper option, Sport Plus, does not convert the suspension to granite, in contrast to every M car we can think of, and the ride quality remains adequate for a sports sedan.
The CS delivered a simple and manageable 1.02 g on the skidpad, which was 0.05 more than the competition. With more grip, stable body control, and lively steering, you can create a sports sedan that can tear through canyons and will make most sports cars look small in comparison.
Maybe you’re curious as to what CS stands for. Calorie Suppression or Challenge Special can be the cause. What is known is that a Customer Surcharge will be added when BMW removes weight from a vehicle and adds those letters. Your $143,995 at least covers all the Competition hardware as well as the M Driver’s package, which increases the peak speed and includes some driving instruction. The Competition costs just a little bit more than that, but the CS’s tires and settings result in a quicker, livelier, and more tuned-in M5.
It’s a monster, the most potent production BMW ever. But it’s too bad about the tire condition.
In addition to being the most crazy M5 of the F90 (sixth generation), the new 2022 BMW M5 CS (short for Competition Sport) is also one of the most absurd production BMWs ever. It’s undoubtedly the strongest: The S63 M TwinPower twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 produces 553 lb-ft of torque between 1,800 and 5,950 rpm and 627 horsepower at 6,000 rpm. The M5 CS offers the same peak torque as the M5 Competition, but at an additional 90 revolutions per minute. The peak-torque rpm range of the M5 Comp already exceeds that of the ordinary M5 by 170 rpm, so while that might not seem like much, bear that in mind. In terms of M5 horsepower comparisons, the normal M5 produces 600 hp at 6,000 rpm, while the M5 Competition produces 617 hp at the same speed.
Comparing the 2022 BMW M5 CS to its “lesser” counterparts, it gains more than simply more power and revs. It has the same chassis and suspension improvements over the M5 as the M5 Comp offers, including firmer engine mounts, suspension springs, a 0.2-inch lower ride height, more negative front camber, and stiffer rear anti-roll bars and toe-link ball-joint mounts. In comparison to the M5 Competition, BMW claims that the M5 CS receives more “spring and Dynamic Damper Control tuning” to “take advantage of the lower vehicle weight and of the optionally available (free) Pirelli P Zero Corsa ultra-high-performance tires.” Keep in mind the rubber point because we’ll get back to it in a moment.
Ah, speaking of weight, the M5 CS topped the scales at 4,089 pounds, compared to the 4,344 pounds that BMW claims the M5 Comp weighs. Although we haven’t had a chance to weigh an M5 Comp, we have a suspicion that it would weigh less than its stated weight given the criteria by which BMW calculates the curb weights of their vehicles. In any case, this is a significant distinction between the two versions, and the M5 CS has a diet that includes more carbon-fiber reinforced plastic components, including as the unpainted carbon fiber hood vents, front splitter, mirror caps, rear diffuser, and rear spoiler. Further weight reduction is made possible by the engine cover’s use of CFRP and the car’s decreased need for soundproofing.
I dislike
The 2022 M5 CS, powered by a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine with 627 horsepower, is BMW’s most potent production vehicle. Yes, it’s only a 10-hp bump over the M5 Competition, but that’s enough to earn the title of “most powerful,” and in this industry, bragging rights are highly prized. In addition, the V8 produces 553 pound-feet of torque, which is fully available between 1,800 and 5,950 rpm. In other words, the M5 CS is always only a throttle tap away from having an absolute crap-ton of power.
BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system distributes the engine’s power via an eight-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels. The M5 feels active while navigating the narrow mountain switchbacks of Southern California. You can entirely disable the traction control and lock the car into two-wheel drive, but that’s a bit overkill for public highways. Additionally, the xDrive system’s 4WD Sport mode and the stability control system’s middle-of-the-road M Dynamic Mode enable plenty of rambunctiousness in the CS. This is a riot, I assure you.
TRAIL AND ROAD
The BMW M5 CS is a remarkable high-performance vehicle that combines power, driving dynamics, exclusivity, and emotional design in a singular way. As a four-door sedan, it can be utilized in all settings and is also built for quick laps on racetracks like the Nurburgring Nordschleife, where the suspension setup was fine-tuned by BMW M experts. The front and rear Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires, which measure 275/35 at the front and 285/35 at the rear and have been specifically matched to the BMW M5 CS, offer the most grip.
The meaning of BMW M5 CS
Okay, BMW nerds, who is aware of the meanings of CSL and CS? You may believe that you do, but in all likelihood, you do not. Before you strut your Roundel-branded chest out at me for questioning your understanding of BMW, let me explain that you probably don’t because the majority of BMW employees aren’t even aware of what it stands for anymore. To genuinely learn what those names mean today, Horatiu had to do a remarkable amount of searching and prodding. He discovered throughout his brief probe that multiple BMW employees had given him several distinct false responses.
He did, however, eventually learn the truth, and now it is my duty to tell you the truth. I currently carry the information about your BMW. Since some of you undoubtedly have predicted it, it’s really not all that shocking. Competition Sport Lightweight is referred to as CSL, and Competition Sport is, you guessed it, referred to as CS.
Why does this matter? Because when the original 3.0 CSL originated the term, it genuinely stood for “Coupe Sport Lightweight” for decades. The 3.0 CSL was a coupe in reality. The moniker persisted when the E46 M3 CSL was introduced because it was also a coupe. The “Coupe” element of the moniker, however, was no longer appropriate because the M3 CS and M5 CS are all four-door sedans. The name was changed to “Competition Sport Lightweight” as a result.
Some individuals also believed it meant for “Club Sport Lightweight,” but they were never correct. That was never accepted, and they received no awards. That settles it, though, because “Competition Sport Lightweight” refers to the future BMW M4 CSL as well as the really awesome, ultra-exclusive successor to the 3.0 CSL. You can now explain this acronym to all your buddies at the bar. Providing they give a damn.
The BMW M5 CS has a restriction.
Speedy Brothers In their most recent video, a YouTube channel reports on a really interesting car. Only 250 of the limited edition powerful BMW M5 CS will ever be produced.
What vehicle is quicker than the BMW M5 CS?
The Ferrari 812 Superfast is superior in terms of weight and power. On paper, it can outrun the BMW M5 CS in the sprint (2.7 vs 2.9 seconds). However, the M5 CS puts power to all four wheels, giving it better odds, particularly at the start. The first quarter-mile race between the two cars made this clear.
The M5 CS made a strong start in the quarter-mile drag race and quickly pulled away from the 812 Superfast. Ferrari, however, was able to reduce the lead. At 10.9 seconds, both cars crossed the finish line, but the BMW was in front by a few feet.
A half-mile rolling race at 50 mph made up the second run. As soon as both vehicles reached 50 mph, the 812 Superfast used its greater power and lighter weight to pull away from the BMW. The Italian sports vehicle almost had an easy victory.
The 50 mph half-mile rolling race was repeated, except this time both cars were in manual. The outcome was the same as the first rolling race, and Mat’s expression of displeasure was the same. The M5 CS got its comeuppance in the braking race, which it narrowly won.
What does CS in the acronym BMW mean?
Coupe Sport was the original meaning of the abbreviation CS (current), but it has since changed to Competition Sport, which refers to the most extreme versions of a BMW M vehicle. Based on the CS code, CSL (current) stands for “Coupe Sport Leichtbau,” which features advanced lightweight technologies.
The M5 CS: Is it a supercar?
With a top speed of 200 mph and a 0-60 time of almost 3 seconds, you can bet your front teeth that the BMW M5 Competition is stomping on some supercars’ toes. Consider the Lamborghini Huracan as an example.
After 3.2 seconds pass, the exotic supercar made in Italy can accelerate from a standing posture to 60 mph. That’s only 0.1 seconds faster than the BMW M5 Comp, and the Huracan’s time will vary because it has rear-wheel drive.
What number of BMW CS exist?
Unfortunately, the chassis numbers do not follow a set order after the second half of 2019. 182 M4 CS cars in this range of chassis numbers were built.
