HISTORY
The Rapp Company was established in Munich, Germany, as an aircraft engine manufacturer in 1916. The next year, the name was changed to Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW). The Versailles Treaty at the end of World War I barred German companies from manufacturing aviation engines; however, the company was already producing motorcycle engines, therefore they expanded to motorcycle production in 1923. The business started producing the “Dixi,” the first BMW car, in 1929. In 1943, the expanding car and engine firm created a jet aviation engine in addition to producing vehicles and engines for Germany’s war effort in World War II. One of the first jet engines in history entered into production the next year. Rockets for use in battle were also tested by the corporation. But by 1945, when the Allies had defeated Germany, the company had collapsed. The major factory in Munich was dismantled, and plants had been destroyed in four separate German locations. A three-year production halt was imposed by the Allies due to the company’s participation in the manufacture of rockets and aircraft engines.
The 501, the first post-War vehicle developed by BMW, was a commercial disaster. Their limousine manufacturing activities faced significant losses the next year, and the business was placed up for sale. However, BMW’s investors, staff, and dealers united to support the business, and with a new capital structure, it survived and started to expand. BMW gained a reputation as a high-performance “prestige” car manufacturer in the 1960s. BMW of North America, Inc. (BMW NA) was founded in 1975 to serve as the importer of BMW vehicles into the United States. In 1980, the North American affiliate took over the import and distribution of BMW motorbikes. The next year, BMW established a business in Japan, making it the first European auto importer to do so. Rover Group, based in the UK, joined BMW in 1994.
