Numbers are crucial, especially when analyzing cars, and BMW’s new 340i xDrive is a bewildering and occasionally absurd number-fest.
First off, everything is referred to by numbers, yet both BMW and Mercedes have spent so much time refining their numbering systems that nothing makes sense anymore. The 2.0-liter engine in the 2016 BMW 328i replaces the 1.8-liter engine that powered the BMW 318i in 1984. A 4.3-liter V8 is found in the 1998 Mercedes-Benz C43 AMG. 2016 Mercedes C300? 2 litres. For market positioning, these manufacturers ignored the meanings underlying those numbers, referring to a 2.0-liter as having the same performance as a 3.0-liter, for instance.
BMW therefore updated its 3-series lineup this year and changed the names once more. Even though its engine has the same 3.0 liters of displacement and is still turbocharged, the former 335i becomes the 340i. While on paper giving 22/33/26 mpg city/highway/combined, it actually produces an additional 20hp (14.9kW), bringing its output to 320hp and 330ft-lb of torque (239kW and 449Nm). Over the length of our time with the automobile, we averaged 24.4 mpg.
BMW B58
In 2015, the BMWB58 turbocharged straight-six engine went into production. The N55 was replaced by the B58, which debuted with the F30 340i.
Following the B38 and B48 engines, the B58 is a member of BMW’s new modular engine family, which includes engines with 500 cc (30.5 cu in) of displacement per cylinder.
The B58 engine, which is found in the 340i and 440i, was designated one of the world’s ten best engines in 2016, in 2018, in 2022 (M240i), in X3 and X4 M40i, in Z4 M40i, in 2019 (X5), and in 2020 (M240i) (M340i).
The high performance variant of the B58 engine is the S58, which debuted in early 2019.

Now, about that numerical designation of 340: The improvement over the previous top-of-the-line (non-M) 3 Series, the 335, from the previous year is due to a new 3.0-litre, turbocharged, inline six-cylinder that, in ordinary form, generates 320 horsepower and 330 lb.-ft of torque. The new modular “BMW EfficientDynamics” engine debuts in the company’s lineup on the 340i. With what BMW calls TwinPower Turbo technology, it’s a compact, lightweight unit that should offer the best possible balance of power and efficiency.
BMW boasts that a rear-wheel-drive 340i with the eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission accelerates to 100 km/h in only 4.8 seconds, while the 340i xDrive does it in just 4.6 seconds. Yes, Stig want tobes, you can still purchase one with a six-speed manual (greater traction at launch clearly offsets the added weight of the AWD). I’ll have to believe the firm when they say there weren’t many opportunities to let the car go free due to pre-Christmas traffic, the arctic vortex, and Colorado lows that caused congestion on the roadways over the week. Unfortunately, the 3’s muscularity can already be felt with a light tap on the gas, the exhaust system emitting a deep rumbling. And that’s without employing the Sport+ gearbox setting, which enables repeated consecutive downshifts as well as full engine redline revving.
The 2017 Wards 10 Best Engines list includes the BMW B58 engine.
A little over a year ago, there was a specific moment when I realized BMW was back. Not that it had been far gone for very long, but over the past few years there had been a sense that the renowned Bavarian brand was drifting away from its roots. But I was aware that BMW was once again being BMW last year when I attended a press conference in Mexico.
It happened when I pushed the starter button for the first time in the brand-new (at the time) BMW 340i’s brand-new B58 engine. There wasn’t much reason to think that the N55 engine it replaced, which had nearly identical specs, was any different because it had a 3.0 liter displacement, six inline cylinders, and 320 horsepower. And while the N55 engine is still a fantastic powerplant, the B58 seems like a lot of fuss for nothing. up till it began.
The familiar BMW I6 engine returned with a throaty growl and a faint snarl. Since then, it has been my preferred engine produced by the Bavarians. It appeals to me more than the S55 engine in the M3 and the improved N55 engine in the M2, respectively. The B58 embodies BMW with its turbine-smooth power delivery, understated growl, and desire to rev that contributed to the brilliance of vehicles like the E30 325i. The B58 has now been selected one of Wards 10 Best Engines two years in a row, so it appears that I’m not the only one who loves it.
It made the same list for 2017 as it did for 2016, according to Wards, who named it one of the “10 Best” for 2016. However, this year’s B58-equipped automobile is distinct from the one from the previous year. It was the BMW 340i last year, and this year it is the M240i. The engine in the latter vehicle has a slight power increase, going from 320 horsepower to 340 horsepower. But the same traits still hold true. It surpasses the improved N55 in the M2 and is the best engine produced by BMW thanks to its mix of strength, efficiency, and fluid motion.
“This engine is praised by judges for being exceptionally smooth and slippery while using less fuel than other of the 4-cylinder turbos we examined. The M240i’s B58 got close to 26 mpg (9 L/100 km) over the course of 12 magnificent days of enthusiastic driving “Wards Auto stated.
Being a big admirer of the B58 myself, it’s great to see Wards continue to support it. It’s a true jewel, and I hope BMW maintains it in production for as long as it has the N55.
