A competitive version of the road car, the 3.0 L turbocharged straight-six engine, and the 7-speed dual clutch transmission are found in the BMW M4 GT4. These road car components, as well as shared electronics systems like the TCS, are being reused with an eye toward cost, maintenance, and driveability. Additional race engineering from the GT3 version is also being employed. In accordance with the Balance of Performance requirements, engines must be reduced to 317 kW (431 PS; 425 horsepower) in order for the chassis to be homologated under the SRO GT4 category, which is geared toward amateur drivers. At the 2017 24 Hours of Nurburgring, the car made its premiere.

Performance – Engine, Transmission, and Other
A magnificent 3.0-liter inline-six with twin turbochargers that is available in three power levels powers the M4. The base model has 406 pound-feet of torque and 473 horsepower. It is paired with a six-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive. In our tests, this configuration reached 60 mph in 3.8 seconds and finished the quarter-mile at 121 mph in 12.0 ticks. The Competition edition is even faster with 503 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, but there is only the option of an eight-speed automatic transmission. Only the M4 Comp can be fitted with a rear-biased all-wheel-drive system to make up for the lack of a stick-shift option. With this equipment, the all-wheel drive M4 Competition coupe achieved a 60 mph time at our test track that was 2.8 seconds faster than the regular car. The last model is the 1000-unit-only M4 CSL, which has an eight-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive and produces 543 horsepower. Every M4 has electronically regulated exhaust systems that become louder in Sport and Sport Plus drive modes, as well as adjustable brake pedal feel and adaptive dampers. The M Sound button can be pressed at any moment to reduce the volume. BMW also offers a disproportionate number of customizable drive-mode choices, which in our opinion may muddie the driving experience that BMW’s engineers intended. Thankfully, the M4 Competition’s time in the driver’s seat demonstrated its tenacious acceleration, amazing cornering grip, and steadfast stability. We’re also pleased to note that BMW has enhanced the steering feel of the coupe, though don’t anticipate it to provide the same level of feedback as any two-door Porsche. The M4 Competition and CSL variants have staggered sets of 19-inch front wheels and 20-inch rear wheels, in contrast to the ordinary M4’s 18-inch front wheels and 19-inch rear wheels. The M4 can be ordered with a set of fade-resistant carbon-ceramic brakes and has a carbon-fiber roof that lowers its center of gravity.
What other M4 Coupe models are there?
There are four main model variations of the 2023 BMW M4 Coupe. The 3.0 liter BMW M TwinPower Turbo inline-6 cylinder engine in the Limited Edition BMW M4 CSL produces 543 horsepower.
Detailing the BMW M4
- Performance and 0-60 time – The M4 equals the speed and acceleration of recent supercars, reaching 62 mph in 4.1 seconds and 155 mph. The time of 8.6 seconds to reach 100 mph is the most impressive statistic, though.
- Engine and transmission – The 3-litre, twin-turbocharged straight-six produces 425bhp, but the new engine’s torque, which peaks at 406lb ft from just 1850rpm, is where the real action is.
- > Ride and handling – The new M4 feels more alert and agile since it is lighter than the coupe it replaces. Though some feel has been lost because the steering is now electronically rather than hydraulically assisted.
- > MPG and operating costs – The M4 is now significantly more economical than before, and BMW claims a combined 34.4mpg.
- The M4’s relative youth is evident in the cabin, yet quality and technology are indisputable.
- The M4’s distinctive design features include a “powerdome” bonnet, enlarged wheel arches, deep air intakes, and the quad-tailpipes that have become standard on M-cars.

BMW uses the interior speakers to enhance the sound of the new turbo engine in an effort to replicate some of that emotional involvement. Unfortunately, the outcome is not totally compelling.
BMW gives customers the option of a six-speed manual or a seven-speed twin-clutch DCT transmission. It’s encouraging to know that M4 customers may still choose a stick and a pedal at a time when many automakers seem to be killing off their manual gearboxes, albeit relatively few will really do so.
The DCT ‘box performs admirably in both manual and automatic modes. When left to its own devices, especially when cold, it can be a touch clumsy, but shifts are often smooth and swift. When in manual mode, they really hammer in and react quickly to adjustments made by the driver using the paddles that are placed on the steering wheel.
However, we do have some reservations about how the drivetrain reengages, particularly while accelerating hard and moving from third to fourth gear. The torque delivery when the next gear engages is so sudden and quick that it may disturb the rear axle and cause the tyres to lose grip.
The M4 GTS’s engine is fundamentally the same as the standard M4’s, but with the aid of a water injection, it increases its 2979cc straight-six’s power to 493bhp. The system itself doesn’t enhance horsepower; instead, it cools the gases in the inlet, enabling even higher boost pressures, which does increase power. Water injection enables the GTS to achieve a boost of 2.5bar as opposed to the basic car’s 2.2bar from the water-to-air intercooler.
