Differences between ES and SE trim levels
Exact differences vary by model, but generally speaking, the ES features manual air conditioning instead of climate control, somewhat smaller alloy wheels, perhaps no pdc, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a few other minor specification changes that I’m not really sure about.
An ES lacks rear power windows and front fog lights but has a sports suspension and steering wheel; nevertheless, the steering wheel is not multifunctional.

Oh my, I neglected the sport! No, Andrew, they are not the same. These only had sport suspension and 17″ alloy wheels instead of the Sport’s M-tech body kit and Recaro seats. These had split rims, which I believe were alloy wheels, and they looked a lot like the “ClubSport” edition 330Ci from around the same period (see http://www.kalach.easynet.be/style/style 071.htm). (Now that I think about it, afaik, the ES and ES SE also used anthracite as the headliner.)
The ES and ES SE (no, not SE ES!) were “upgrade” spec cars that were only produced for a brief period of time in late 2002 or early 2003. They were created to generate interest in and keep some e39s moving out the door before the e60 arrived. The ES and ES SE were both based on the SE, whereas the ES was based on the Boggo spec. If the individual options were added to the base spec, the cost of the bundle would have been significantly higher. IIRC, the ES purportedly contained PS4k worth of equipment for just PS500.
