If there are no additional notifications, what does “Check Control” mean?
My display is currently just showing the messages “CHECK CONTROL” and “SEE OWNERS MANUAL,” with no further messages. I read through the owners manual, but there is no explanation of what the message “Check Control” implies. What does “Check Control” mean?
It implies that in order to pull information from your vehicle, BMW DIS/MoDiC/GT-1 must be connected to your vehicle (or aftermarket software that some Indys have that can do it).
A Priority 3 Check Control Warning is CHECK CONTROL SEE OWNERS MANUAL. There are several electrical defaults in your car for which there is no “pre-programmed” notification. It is also mentioned in the owner’s manual (see illustration below):

The message did indeed disappear. The old battery passed a load test but would not maintain a full charge and after resting overnight bled down to 12.37 volts. A completely charged, healthy battery should be able to retain 12.68 volts when the voltage is measured the next day after it has sat overnight. The instrument cluster is actually alerting you that it cannot connect to the check control module. Either the CCM, KOM, or the physical wiring connecting the two are broken. Or, as in Don’s case, there may be a low voltage issue. Check the CCM for power (there are only 1-2 pins across the two connectors that are relevant).
What might this imply if the check control light is on?
The “check control” panel, often known as the “On Board Computer” (OBC), is found under the heating and air conditioning panel on your BMW. There is most likely an error message in the display, i.e. Low washer fluid, low coolant, check brake lights, etc. The yellow “CHECK CONTROL” Warning indication on the instrument panel should go away if you press the “CHECK” button on the panel. A sensor that detects low pad depth will cause the parking brake signal “BRAKE” to remain lit if the pads truly do get that low. You should replace the brakes if this occurs (and replace the sensor too because they get brittle).
If you have good brake pad depth and conduct a simple google search, you can reset this “code”/warning. Take it to a mom-and-pop store and ask them to inform you if you need the brakes done if you are unsure or uncomfortable checking the brake depth.
How to remove the BMW e60’s check control messages
Put the key in the ignition and check your readout of the BMW ID codes. Who could anybody love those messages? You’ll learn how to clear check control messages on a BMW e60 from us.
