The Performance Game Can Be Played in Two Different Ways
With more than 60 years of racing experience, BMW has experienced numerous victories. Over a century ago, Mercedes was the first to enter the winner’s circle. Because of this, many people believe that these two German powerhouses have been producing specialised performance vehicles for about as long. Not so.
BMW established BMW Motorsport as a separate business in 1972 to manage its performance-car and racing operations. This Munich-based division was rebranded BMW M in 1993 because road cars had grown to be such a significant component of its business. The three operating divisions of BMW M today are Automobiles (the production arm), Individual (which builds cars to order), and Driver Training. The name BMW Motorsport was revived in 1996 to identify the independent business with headquarters in England that manages all BMW motorsport activities.
The 1978 5-Series sedan, which featured an optional 3.2L/197-hp I-6 engine derived from the 633CSi, is where the M brand first appeared. Despite not sporting the M logo, desire was so high that BMW released the M535i in 1979. The 3.5L/218-hp I-6 typically seen in the 635CSi provided its power.
While the M535i was being developed, BMW unveiled the still stunning mid-engine M1 exotic, which is arguably the most well-known vehicle to bear the “M” brand. BMW hired German manufacturer Baur to create and assemble the 400 roadgoing automobiles required to homologate the M1 for global Group 5 competition, based on the Turbo concept car from 1972. Delivery of the road cars was delayed due to production issues, and by the time the 39 racing variants (some with 850-hp engines) were constructed, the M1 was no longer competitive. This year, there are five M models available, each with the M-signature high-performance engine and a manual transmission—no M is permitted to have an automatic transmission, at least not under the current regulations.
While Mercedes-AMG has lately been placed under the management of the massive corporation DaimlerChrysler, BMW Motorsport has always been a subsidiary of its parent company, BMW. DaimlerChrysler has owned a 51 percent stake in Mercedes-AMG since January 1999, and by the end of 2008, it will take over the remaining shares.
In 1967, Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher established the company in Grossaspach, Germany, which now employs 500 people and produces 12,000 cars annually. Building race cars and modified street cars based on Mercedes-Benz production versions, AMG had some success in the 1970s. Customers don’t appear to have objected to the redesigned grille as much as many enthusiasts believed. Timo Resch, head of client sales at BMW M, stated, “The response to the new generation of BMW M3 and BMW M4 has been absolutely phenomenal, and we can therefore predict that the demand for these legendary sports vehicles will continue to expand in 2022.”
It will be interesting to observe how sales of the BMW M perform in 2018. It will also offer two new electrified versions to help attract the more EV-minded fans, namely the BMW i4 M50 and iX M60. Later this year, it will also introduce the standalone BMW XM, which is almost guaranteed to sell out completely, and the M3 Touring.
However, Mercedes-AMG will be releasing its own vehicles in 2022. The company is set to benefit greatly from the all-new Mercedes-AMG SL-Class (now an all-AMG product), as the SL is always a popular convertible, and it will also be launching a hybrid version of the C63. Therefore, some intriguing new AMGs will be available to boost the brand’s sales report. Will the BMW M continue to outsell its primary competition this year? This engine is tuned to produce the same 302 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The extended model, however, has a wheelbase that has been expanded by more than two inches to provide more legroom for Chinese customers who prefer to ride in the back while being escorted through the nation’s sometimes congested metropolitan streets. Beijing will host the start of production later this year.
Nicholas Speeks, head of local sales for Mercedes, told ANC that despite restrictions on the larger-displacement engines for which the performance sub-brand is known, demand for AMG cars is rising in China. The A35, however, is likely to pay less in taxes than premium cars with twin-turbo V8 engines, like as the S63 sedan and G63 sport-ute. This is especially true given that the A35 will be assembled locally using German engines.
A specialized AMG dealership has been erected by Daimler and its local partners in Beijing, and another is planned for Shanghai. A “brand experience center” has also been established at the Zhejiang racing track.
Hold AMG automobiles any value?
Only a small number of Mercedes’ many models are expected to retain less than 40% of their initial worth after five years.
