I think the X5 is only suitable for light off-road use. It lacks skid plates, extensive suspension travel, and low range gearing, all of which are necessary for what I would consider true off-road driving. With its all-wheel drive traction and high ground clearance, the X5 is capable of light off-roading with ease.
The car is quite capable in smooth, slick conditions with the right tires, effective use of the three modes of the computer controlled traction system, and an experienced driver (snow, mud & sand).
