Thomas Moorehead, a businessman in the auto industry and a developer of real estate, was born to Minnie Mae Thomas on April 21, 1944 in Monroe, Louisiana. He attended the segregated Carroll High School, where he graduated with honors in 1962, and Grambling State University, where he received his B.A. in business management in 1966. The University of Michigan awarded Moorehead a master’s degree in social work in 1971.

Moorehead began working as a systems analyst for Mobile Corporation in 1966, followed by Chrysler Corporation in 1969. He accepted a position as director of community services at the University of Michigan after taking part in training programs at the United Auto Workers Training Institute and the Chrysler Management Institute. While pursuing his Ph.D. in urban and regional planning, he taught graduate students at the School of Social Work in this location. He acquired the Marriott Residence Inn at the National Harbor Resort and Convention Center in Maryland in 2007 and became its first African American owner. When Rolls Royce Motorcars of Sterling originally opened in 2013, Moorehead made history by becoming the first African American to receive a full-service Rolls Royce franchise. In Fort Washington, Maryland, he then bought Harley-Davidson of Washington D.C., and in 2016, he became the first African American dealer of Lamborghini and McLaren.
