In essence, the BMW M4 is an M3 Coupe with a different moniker. It’s a quick, captivating, and incredibly desirable sports vehicle that even provides some practicality for drivers who occasionally need to transport luggage or passengers in the backseat.

For many purists, the M4’s turbocharged engine lacks the drama and personality of the previous vehicle’s naturally aspirated V8. But if you ignore the phony soundtrack, you’ll find a very excellent setup. Despite being much more economical than the component it replaces, it provides the kind of speed that will make owners of supercars uneasily scan their rearview mirrors.

Even better, the M4 is exhilarating to drive, just like all BMW M automobiles. The handling of rear-wheel-drive vehicles in slick weather demands respect, but the end result is that you have to be on your toes, which contributes to an engaging driving experience. Make sure you can live with the tradeoffs in ride comfort before making any purchases because the price list currently only contains the more extreme Competition Pack versions.

This BMW is a true supercar for every occasion when you take into account the M4’s respectable everyday utility.

One of the most sought-after sports cars available for purchase right now in the UK is the BMW M4 Competition. With a history that can be traced back to the cult classic BMW M3, it is available as a two-door coupe or the open-topped M4 Convertible, and it undoubtedly has a strong reputation to uphold.

A Warranty Is Recommended

Surprisingly dependable is the M4. Reliability reviews for the F3x 4-Series were mixed, although the F82 M4, the most technologically sophisticated 4-series model, was considered to be one of the better automobiles. A warranty is recommended because parts are expensive and these things can still go wrong.

They are not overly pricey, but they will be useful at some point. The M4 is a specialized vehicle that needs specialized maintenance and parts. All of this is not inexpensive.

It is what?

It’s a major occasion. The original BMW M4 was popular. For those of us who are passionate about the history of performance automobiles, named the two-door M3 after a highway that passes Slough seems a little disrespectful. The M3 four-door it was so closely connected to sold almost twice as many of them as people who actually spent a lot of money on stated performance cars.

BMW is adept at understanding its clientele, and it labels M4 owners as “extroverts.” The rest of the car’s visual assertiveness, particularly in the optional Sao Paulo yellow paint, supports those enormous kidney grilles, which don’t actually look all that offensive in real life. Honest.

They frequently make headlines in meme culture, but there are more urgent plot developments in the world of sport saloons and coupes, of which the M3 and M4 are the epicenter. You can no longer get a manual in the UK, and the paddleshifters that are left work a ZF automatic transmission rather than a more aggressive twin-clutch transmission. This is similar to how the 3.0-litre twin-turbo six up front now reaches 500bhp.

The price has increased past PS75,000, and the weight has increased as well (now over 1,700kg). It sounds like a good spin to compete with “I genuinely utilized lockdown to grow as a person,” but BMW claims the extra weight “has been spent in better safety and emissions.”

However, the new M4 Competition’s performance numbers (503 horsepower, 479 pound-feet of torque, 0-62 mph in 3.9 seconds with RWD, and a peak speed of 180 mph) and the optional PS2,765 xDrive 4WD – as well as an M3 Touring – show that this is a mature vehicle. Many would argue that it was necessary. The introduction of the first M4 coincided with the M3 family’s introduction of turbocharging, and the changeover wasn’t very seamless. Early F82 M4s vehicles had a reputation for being quite a handful, and they were capable of becoming vindictive.

With the introduction of a facelift (or Life Cycle Impulse in BMW speak) and the more capable Competition version, the handling’s more acute edges were somewhat softened, but those who had witnessed an M4’s rear wheels spinning during a third to fourth upchange (in a straight line) weren’t exactly lining up around the block to see how much friendlier it had become.

However, this new G82 generation’s gaudy grille and M Drift Analyser mode would imply that the car has kept some of its wild side, if not even enhanced it. It’s time to try…

What is the conclusion?

The M3 coupe has a new moniker, two turbos, and one of the most intense driving experiences currently available.

This decision became much simpler as the M4 grew older and developed better manners. Early on, the car’s rating may change based on how many times it attempted to mutilate you on the way to work. Now, this is just a fantastic performance vehicle that (most of the time) responds to the driver’s cues.

And hey, we enjoy a little aggression, especially when some of the M4’s main competitors (*cough* Audi RS5) confuse their priorities between on-paper figures and real-world fun and imagine throwing a ton of unstoppable speed and unbreakable traction at something will kick it to the top of the class.

The M4 isn’t perfect, but it’s also never boring. Although significantly different from the M3s that came before it, it is as memorable, which is important.

The BMW M4 is always up for having fun.

Inside the M4, BMW boasts one of, if not the greatest manual transmission on the market. This smooth six-speed brings to mind the old-school Bimmer manual transmissions, with its somewhat rubbery movement between strategically set gates feeling quite similar to how it did in the E46 M3 at the time. The clutch has a clearly defined pickup point that makes footwork simple, and if you’re not the master of heel-toe, the conventional rev-matching system will produce flawless downshifts.

The two bright red M buttons on top of the steering wheel allow you to change a plethora of vehicle settings for the 2021 M4 exactly like other contemporary BMWs. My ability to customize the throttle, steering, suspension, and braking is enabled when I press the Setup button on the center panel. If you love a tight throttle or brake action, there are choices for both that are still very engaging in standard mode. Throwing everything into Sport eliminates any body roll that may have ever occurred, though I would advise saving Sport Plus for the track or the best asphalt surfaces. You can get numerous traction control modes that can allow you get a bit drifty before reining things in if you spend $900 on the M Drive Professional update.

The M4 is very compliant in daily use, despite its ability to be razor-sharp when the road becomes tricky. The M4 is never thrown off balance even on Southeast Michigan’s roads, which are, may we say, not the best for sports vehicles. Even the sharper divots don’t cause a suspension thunk; they are handled with just a little shaking to the cabin. If you don’t mind the noise from its wide Michelin Pilot 4S summer tires, the M4 is a perfectly adequate vehicle for commuting, running errands, and all the tiny daily-life stuff in between.

Is it productive? Actually, no. The 2021 M4 receives a 16 mpg city and 23 mpg highway rating from the EPA. In my experience, city mileage is about there, but since there are only six forward gears, staying out of the boost and maintaining a reasonable pace will increase the highway economy to closer to 25 or 26, if not slightly above that.

The BMW M4 is dependable.

Even though the 3 Series and 4 Series vehicles have a patchy reliability history and placed fourth out of eight vehicles in their respective classes in our most recent What Car? Reliability Survey, the M4 appears to be reliable on paper. BMW as a company came in at number 13 out of 30 manufacturers.

Which BMW M2 or M4 is superior?

With 425 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque as standard, the BMW M4 has a modest advantage over the other two vehicles in terms of power. The BMW M2 Competition has 410 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. The torque in both vehicles is therefore equal, while the M4 produces 15 more horsepower as standard

Is the BMW M4 a quick vehicle?

Modern M3 and M4 models are extremely speedy vehicles. In our own tests, the vehicle reached 100 mph in in 8.6 seconds, matching the acceleration of a Ferrari 430. According to BMW’s own published statistics, vehicles with optional DCT gears can accelerate to 62 mph from a complete stop in just 4.2 seconds. Although the six-speed manual version behind the DCT model in acceleration terms—getting to 62 mph in 4.3 seconds instead—it is still a very respectable time for a rear-wheel drive, 1595 kg vehicle.

According to BMW, the lighter, more potent M4 GTS with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in under 3.8 seconds. However, we managed to clock a time of 3.7 seconds and a 0-100 mph time of 7.8 seconds.

While the increase in horsepower over the previous E92 M3 coupe may not be as significant as you might anticipate, the acceleration numbers are unquestionably superior. According to our timing equipment, the old, normally aspirated M3 coupe, for instance, needed 10.3 seconds to reach 100 mph.

The new car’s sophisticated launch control system helps it leave the starting line as rapidly as possible each time. The driver can modify the system to fit the grip levels.

All variants save the GTS include an electronic top speed limiter that caps the speed at 155 mph.

The soulful, high-revving V8 of the earlier models may not be there in the most recent model, but the use of turbocharging has elevated it to a higher level of performance. The new model feels much faster in usage because it has far more torque, which makes it both faster off the line and significantly more accelerative through the gears.

Fans may not like the new kidney grille, but we love the new G82 M4 since it’s a very capable sports vehicle that has significantly more power than the outgoing F82/F83 model. However, we also truly enjoy the previous design, and in some ways, it excels above the current one.

The basic 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 in the BMW M4 has 473 horsepower. The M4 can accelerate with this unit to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds. The C63 S is the sole variant now for sale; the basic Mercedes C63 previously had 469 horsepower, which is fewer than the standard M4 horsepower.

When set to “Competition” mode, the C63 S’s 4.0-liter V8 produces an increased output of 503 horsepower, the same as the M4’s, and this results in a quick speed for both vehicles. The fastest automobile in this group is the Mercedes, which accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds. A 450 horsepower, 3.0 liter V6 engine in the RS5 propels the vehicle to 60 mph in under 3.9 seconds.
