Battery Life, Charging, and Range
The single-motor, rear-drive i4 eDrive40 can go up to about 300 miles on a full battery, according to BMW. The 81.5 kWh battery in the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive M50 is the same, although its maximum claimed range is 245 miles. With a 200 kilowatt charging capacity, these i4 versions can add 88–108 miles in just 10 minutes. The entry-level eDrive35 model has a lower 66.0 kWh net capacity battery, which is said to have a range of about 260 miles and a charging speed maximum of 180 kW. The i4 can charge its battery from empty to full using the Level 2 (up to 11 kW) onboard charger in less than 8 hours.
The impressive electric BMW i4 from 2022 should displace Tesla.
With two new models—the BMW i4 and iX—showcasing its innovative approach to electric vehicles, BMW is currently undergoing its most recent electric revolution. Contrary to BMW’s initial entry into the space in 2014, which featured the eccentric i3 urban runabout and the esoteric i8, these new vehicles appear like conventional BMWs but have electric propulsion. It’s a return to the norm, which ought to please at least some BMW devotees.
Our focus is now on the i4, a low-slung performance sedan with a coupe-like shape and practical hatchback a la Tesla Model S. We recently assessed the iX premium SUV. The i4 is essentially the 4 Series Gran Coupe, a four-door coupe based on the 3 Series sports sedan, in an electric vehicle form. (The I stands for electric power and the “4” for the automobile series.)
The i4 is available in two variations: the eDrive40, which has a rear-wheel drive system, 335 horsepower, and a 301-mile range. Before tax incentives, it is $55,400 at the beginning. Additionally, there is an upgraded model, similar to the one we rented from BMW, that has a 536-hp M50 dual motor setup that makes it all-wheel drive but reduces the range to 270 miles.
Both models contain an 81.5 kWh battery and an 11 kW inbuilt charger that, when linked to a 48-ampere circuit, enables rather speedy home charging. The i4 can take up to a maximum charging power of 195 kW during a lengthy trip when using public DC-fast charging. Although that is extremely competitive, it cannot compete with Tesla’s 250 kW capacity for its Model 3 and Y when connected to the most recent Tesla Supercharger.

A SUV or a BMW i4?
The i4 is a member of the second generation of BMW EVs, which also includes the more futuristic iX electric SUV. BMW has successfully completed the architecture it had long promised to offer in order to support numerous powertrains. While there is a propensity to believe that the i4 is now a subpar EV, the German carmaker accomplished something marginally spectacular. The i4 offers outstanding efficiency while driving like a true BMW sport sedan. They accomplished all of this in a unit that, at the factory, was easily capable of being fitted with a gas engine.
The company is already making plans for the following phase of its EV development. The Neue Klasse is the third phase. In 2025, the first vehicle powered by the specialized EV platform is anticipated. By 2023, the automaker hopes to have twelve all-electric vehicles, including EV versions of the 5 Series and the X1 compact SUV, on the road internationally.

How many pre-orders for BMW i4 have there been?
Like many automakers transitioning to EVs, BMW has announced that it sold out of every 2021 model of its new i4 electric vehicle. With its all-electric iX Sports Activity Vehicle, the company followed suit.
In Munich, BMW recently began i4 series production. The company reportedly made the EV available for preorder earlier this month, and it swiftly sold out, according to a report by CarsDirect. According to the article, delivery of the i4 eDrive40 and M50 trims have both sold out.

According to what we gather, BMW has not publicly said how many i4 or iX vehicles will be produced for the first delivery wave. BMW obtained 2,095 pre-orders for the i4 and 952 for the iX in the US, according to a story we published in July 2021.
