A 600-mile range electric SUV being tested by BMW is made possible by revolutionary battery chemistry.
BMW will test an electric SUV called the iX with a range of 600 miles (965 km), made possible by new battery technology from Our Next Energy (ONE).
Since ONE withheld information regarding the chemistry of its Gemini battery, which claimed to have a far better energy density, we were cautiously doubtful at the time.
Now that ONE is integrating its Gemini battery in an existing electric vehicle, there are still few information available regarding the chemistry, but at least it is working closely with the concerned automaker.
In a test program with BMW, ONE’s backer, the business said its battery will be fitted in a BMW iX electric SUV:
The BMW Group and Our Next Energy (ONE), an energy storage firm with headquarters in Michigan, have reached an agreement for ONE to integrate its GeminiTM Dual-Chemistry battery technology into the BMW iX all-electric Sports Activity Vehicle. With its special long-range Gemini technology, ONE uses 20% less lithium, 60% less graphite, and very little nickel and cobalt. By doing this, ONE is developing more environmentally friendly energy storage technology that has the potential to have a big influence on the environment.

Drivers are becoming more aware that real-world conditions can dramatically lower the performance of their batteries as EV use rises. Electric vehicles face difficulties in everyday settings including maintaining highway speeds, freezing temperatures, climbing mountains, towing, or a combination of all four. We intend to increase battery capacity by two times so that EVs can successfully manage long-distance driving in practical situations.
High Voltage Storage Head at BMW Group New Technologies, Jurgen Hildinger, added:
We are in a good position to add ONE’s IP to the BMW SAV lineup. Given economic viability, we are convinced that this can result in business prospects and plans to include ONE’s battery technologies into prototypes of our future BEV product line-up.
By the end of the year, BMW and ONE hope to finish the iX test car, which should have a range of roughly 600 miles (965 km) on a single charge.
Effective Performance
However, using the iX made me feel as at ease as those pleased cows for the entirety of my own day. The iX had the wheel proportions of the BMW X7, the length, width, and height of the BMW X5, so from the driver’s seat, it seemed substantial and familiar. Using the 523hp-equivalent two electric motors, I sluggishly plowed through small villages on Bavaria’s winding back roads, passing surprised inhabitants as time and space permitted. (I tested the $83,200 iX iDrive50; the iX iDrive40, which is probably less expensive, will not be sold in the United States.)
When I had the chance, I blasted it on the autobahn, easily reaching 120 mph in this 5,659-pound, all-wheel-drive vehicle. (Electronic limits set a 124 mph top speed.) Except for the thrilling (artificial) whirr of the electric engine and the general hum of the tires on the road, the iX seemed stable and oh, so silent. The time from 0 to 62 mph is 4.6 seconds. For purchasers outside of the United States, noise-reducing tires are optional.
With the option of adaptive or individually adjustable brake recuperation, IX helps to improve overall effectiveness and makes one-pedal driving and coasting possible. Depending on your energy demands and how busy the roads are, it’s nice to flip between those modes.
There are various regenerative brake modes to choose from depending on how much you want to drive with just one pedal. I spent the majority of the day in the gentlest of them all. According to BMW, using a DC fast charger to charge from 10% full to 80% full will take just 35 minutes. BMW will market a home charger, but a spokeswoman would not disclose the cost, only saying that it would be “similar to competitors.”
I don’t advise purchasing an EV if you don’t have a charger at home; it’s extremely inconvenient. Public charging stations, in my experience, are frequently damaged and difficult to use in dubious locations like the parking lots of Denny’s and abandoned garages, or they are so crowded with people that I have to wait to charge before waiting some more.
I left Dingolfing’s 2.45 million m2 campus after a brief tour (the factory creates battery cells using only green energy from approved sources) and arrived at the airport feeling peaceful and revived. BMW’s new route-planning advice worked flawlessly, which defied all expectations given how poorly car navigation systems often function. Even pictures of the lush Alps were captured along the trip by an internal camera. Posterity! The elimination of the middle tunnel present in internal combustion vehicles resulted in more legroom and plenty of storage space, and my luggage, coats, and related travel accessories had withstood the ride with ease.
Premium EV enthusiasts will be pleased to learn that BMW has returned to the electric space to address the SUV. Beginning in March 2022, deliveries will begin. It’s past due.

The sharp-dressed SUV, which is now only a concept, was unveiled at Art Basel’s 2021 Miami Beach show this week. It will likely have more subdued style when it enters series production by the end of 2022. The XM Concept, according to BMW, “provides a first view of the new front-end design for BMW’s next luxury-class cars.” That grille doesn’t appear to be getting any smaller any time soon.
