The 2020 BMW 3 Series has ambient lighting, right?
Considering the pedigree of this sports sedan, a new generation of the BMW 3-series is always significant, and the G20 iteration is under even more pressure given the relatively underwhelming characteristics of its F30 predecessor. Our initial impressions of the new 3-series have us cautiously optimistic.
Since the Gran Turismo wagon and hatchback models won’t be available in America for long, there are fewer 3-series models available to us. However, there are still many options available for the discriminating 3-series sedan buyer, so we delved into the online configurator and selected our dream model.
MODEL WE WOULD SELECT:
M340i ($54,995 starting price)
It may seem apparent to choose a 3-series with rear-wheel drive and an inline-six engine up front, but that’s because it’s the right choice. Even while the base 330i model’s turbocharged four-cylinder is a far better value, the M340i’s delicious turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six is hard to refuse. Although not nearly the full-on performance monster that the upcoming M3 will be, this M-badged car nonetheless has a unique appearance and some desirable performance features as standard.
OPTIONS WE WOULD SELECT:
- ($1450) Upholstery in mocha leather with contrast stitching
- $600 for a set of 19-inch wheels and non-run-flat tires
- Paint in Mineral Grey Metallic ($550)
- ($700) Adaptive M suspension
- ($250) Ambient lighting
- Front heated seats ($500)
- tire spare ($150)
The M340i’s beginning price is high, so we tried to limit the options to a minimum to keep the price below $60,000. Even though BMW may have given up on the 3-series’ original goal of being a pure sports sedan years ago, we still prefer the thought of a car with fewer features so that we can concentrate on the driving experience. Even so, we were drawn in by the gorgeous brown leather upholstery and the pricey metallic paint; we did choose a muted gray color to avoid drawing too much attention. The frivolous $250 ambient lighting is included with the improved leather inside, while the $700 adaptive dampers and updated 19-inch wheels with summer non-run-flat tires (which call for adding a $150 spare tire) were both no-brainer upgrades. For those who live in warmer climates, heated front seats may seem unnecessary, but trust us when we say that where we reside in Michigan, they are essential.
Our M340i costs $59,195, slightly under the $60K threshold, and it seems to us that this is the best method to assess if the new 3er can build on its prior triumphs. When will it finally arrive at our door?

Customized lighting is the best method to create a distinctive appearance, whether you desire a cool blue light or a multi-color impact.
Which vehicle has the finest ambient lighting?
The Kia Soul was one of the first mainstream vehicles to include ambient lighting. The speakers’ surrounds on the previous two generations had colored lights that changed color in time with the music. The interior of the new Soul has fresh themes and lit trim, making the space feel cozier. To customize the ambiance to your mood, you can select anything from a dance floor to a serene coffee shop ambience. With 64-color ambient lighting, featuring seven unique themes created in collaboration with the Pantone Color Institute, Kia’s premium K900 sedan kicks things up a level. Ambient lighting, which brightens the inside of sports cars like the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro, is another feature. In the former, you can even customize the color of the instrument cluster.
The ambient lighting in new cars from luxury manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, and BMW is some of the most colorful. Luxury car manufacturers like Bentley and Rolls-Royce boost the grandeur factor by integrating ambient lighting to produce stunning visual effects. For instance, Rolls-Royce uses fiber optic strands embedded in the headliner to transform the inside into a stunning night sky. High-end sound systems in Bentleys have illuminated door speakers to draw attention to detailed (and lovely) details.
BMW dynamic lighting – what is it?
The Dynamic Light Spot is “targeted illumination,” according to BMW. To put it simply, the technology is employed as part of the Night Vision capabilities to illuminate any locations where the car identifies a pedestrian or another form of barrier that may be present.
