Is A BMW E30 A Good First Car?

Even if Fastlane Blocker previously wrote an essay about why it shouldn’t, I believe it is only fair to have one stating why an e30 is the best option.

It is important to note that I am from the US and that the information I have is based on US car culture and the vehicles that BMW imported to the US.

You just received your license, so you must now purchase your first automobile. The Ultimate Driving Machine is a no-brainer, but which one? The second version of the BMW 3 series, which featured a newly created six cylinder named the M20, was released by BMW at the beginning of the 1980s. the installed a 167 horsepower engine in a 2,700 pound vehicle with an antiquated rear suspension system that predated the fabled 2002. What makes it your first car then? Well, despite how difficult it may be to believe, that simple formula works and produces a fantastic automobile. The e30 is God’s Chariot, even if the BMW is sometimes referred to as the Ultimate Driving Machine. If you are wise and realize that you are not Ken Block, its light weight, fun, and agility won’t be enough to get you into trouble for very long.

Then again, all of that sounds like fun, so why should it be my first automobile rather than my second or third? Well, it appears that in today’s society, wisdom, knowledge, and talent come with age rather than with practice. I couldn’t even change my own oil without my dad’s help before I bought my e30. I’m currently preparing for my first engine rebuild, can change timing belts with complete confidence, and have picked up a lot of helpful skills along the way. This is because I learned myself, not because I grew older. The same can be said for my ability to drive; it wasn’t something I was born with. On a disused military base near my hometown, it took some trial and error. I started in a parking lot and tested the car out because I was smart about it and refrained from drifting on any mountain roads.

Since I don’t have much money, why should I purchase an older vehicle as opposed to a modern one? You shouldn’t have any trouble budgeting on your automobile expenses considering how many impoverished high school and college students have created amazing and enjoyable cars with e30s. How effectively you handle your finances will determine the outcome. I could have spent a lot of money taking my car to the shop to get simple problems corrected, but instead I just took my toolbox and did it myself. Because of these cars, I’ve learnt things that I never thought I’d be doing. Due to #Murica, I won’t be paying for taxes, insurance, or petrol anymore. We have minimal insurance costs, inexpensive gas, and haven’t been large tax-payers since 1773.

Anyone wishing to purchase an e30 is urged to do so immediately. Life is too short to spend it in dull vehicles.

My very first vehicle was a 5 speed e30. I had never driven a car with five speeds or rear-wheel drive. My mother paid $400 for the automobile, which had almost 340,000 miles on it and no records or maintenance of any kind.

An e30 is a decent starting vehicle. Simply avoid purchasing one with severe body damage, a torn interior, or an engine bay that appears to have been through a hurricane. Although keeping maintenance records is advantageous, most people don’t.

My belief has always been that it is preferable to purchase a cheap E30 and perform all necessary maintenance at once. It will be less expensive than purchasing one that has been “kept,” and you can be sure that it will function as intended. It will also be a learning experience if this is your first time working on an automobile. You can learn practically anything from the Bentley manual.

The best bit of advise is to simply not hurry into any vehicle, even an e30. Don’t purchase an automobile if it is decent but even just a touch suspect. Simply wait; another offer might come along that is more advantageous and suited to your requirements.

The E30 is the only model I’d suggest as a pre-plater if you absolutely want a BMW for your first vehicle.

To avoid paying too much for authentic parts, you’ll need to shop around. Other than that, it’s really not that horrible. Although I don’t think their structural strength is as robust as I’d like, they are dependable vehicles.

The engine runs creamy and smoothly. They work well and are more powerful than the 4 cylinders, but they also use more gasoline than they should, which is to be anticipated in a vintage German six-cylinder vehicle. The engines are more delicate than you might expect in a German product.

Keep an eye out for rust underneath the car, around the taillights, and in the wheel arches. Even though high mileage won’t always be an issue, avoid buying a car without a complete service record.

However, I won’t advise you to get another BMW because they are just too expensive to own and insure as a P-plater. For instance, a male driver of a 1997 BMW would pay $5,000 per year. Keep away.

An MB 190E might be another option if you wanted something comparable. Has good handling, is a stronger automobile, and is considerably more dependable and less expensive to purchase. The one drawback of the BMW is that it doesn’t handle as well out of the box, but it is more composed because of its more sophisticated suspension (minor modifications would greatly improve handling), and they are more popular with automatic transmissions.

Are E30 BMWs trustworthy?

As a safe and useful first vehicle, a BMW 3 series would be a wonderful choice. It has some great safety measures and has superb sight for the driver. However, it wouldn’t be practical for novice drivers with a limited budget.

The combined city and highway mileage for the 2.0L automatic is 30 mpg, which is acceptable.

The 3-series maintains some aspects of an affordable car while projecting a premium aura.

Why is the BMW E30 unique?

The E30 served as BMW’s entry-level luxury vehicle and was offered in a variety of body designs for the duration of its long production cycle. The early 1982 versions shared a coupe body shape with the E21 cars that came before them. In 1983, four-door sedans were launched, then in 1985, convertibles.

It is unclear how many of the original 25 are still in existence, and even more critically, how many have the kind of provenance and history that today’s prices make crucial for any potential owner. This gorgeous M3 Ravaglia is one of them. The homologation special EVO II created towards the end of the chassis run is essentially a rarer variant of the Ravaglia and Cecotto cars.

Due to its near-perfect provenance, this excellent E30 M3 Ravaglia was delivered as a brand-new vehicle to Bolton BMW in September 1989. In its 28 years, the automobile has only traveled 53,500 miles with 4 keepers; the most recent owner, our customer, has had the vehicle since 1994 after purchasing it as an authorized used BMW from Vines in Horsham (which no longer exists as a branch). In his 23 years of ownership, this man has only driven 14,500 miles; he keeps the car in a heated garage and only uses it sometimes on dry days.
