It was broken into yesterday morning, my 2014 X3. It appears that the offender used a wireless gadget to be able to open the doors.

TL;DR
car keys locked in boot. The car is unlocked. front passenger window was broken (since it was the least expensive and easiest to find). A store with a replacement pane for my car was located. on December 24.
I used the key to access the boot but left the doors of the car unlocked. This indicated that the alarm was still activated and that all anti-theft mechanisms were in use. Like any sane person would, I searched for solutions on Google; they all claimed that I was pretty much screwed and either a backup key or a long wire with a hook to fish the keys out. The issue was that they were out of reach through the back or front windows since they were in the boot, under the cover-thing.
I summoned a “expert” who arrived, examined the vehicle, and was defeated; he claimed that his only option was to drill through the tailgate in order to reach the lock itself. I respectfully declined. He made a fairly radical suggestion because the doors on this BMW don’t have conventional locks; instead, they can only be opened using the buttons on the key. I made a second locksmith call who specialized in BMWs. This one claimed he could get the keys, but it was plainly not an option because he would likely irreparably harm the doors and scratch the paint. I had no choice except to act independently.
I returned to the store and purchased some waste bags and sticky tape. I decided to smash the front passenger glass for a variety of reasons:
- The front side windows on the left and right cost the least to replace.
- They are the most easily accessible.
- Because the rear windows are factory tinted, they cost substantially more.
- The little triangle-shaped windows are significantly more expensive, more difficult to find, and need more time to install.
- The most expensive window to change is the back one (apart from the windshield)
To reduce the quantity of glass that would fall into the car, I taped over as much of the window as I could, but I left the bottom left corner unprotected because here is where I would smash it. I then covered my hands with a waste bag to protect them and asked the store’s maintenance staff for a hammer with a sharp end. I took a step back and began bashing. The glass was ultimately cracked by the sharp edge after several hard blows.
At this point, all that was left for me to do was carefully remove the glued window, which was largely still in tact, and thoroughly clean the vehicle. It was pure blind luck that I was able to locate a car dealership that had my specific window in stock and was still open on December 24 given that nearly everyone was closed at the time.
So here I am waiting for them to fix the car, trying to get used to typing on the Smart Keyboard on my iPad Pro, trying not to think about how late we’re going to be. The Smart Keyboard is actually lot better than I anticipated, but it is still inferior to Microsoft’s Surface Pro 4 Type Cover. I’ll elaborate on that later.
