US Model Year BMW Sound Systems

A full-range signal is sent to the front speakers. The high-pass filtered signal is sent to the rear speakers.
Up until MY 2010 (when it was replaced in some cars with base Stereo), the HiFi system was a standard feature in US-spec automobiles. Starting in mid-2011, it became standard once more. There are tweeters and an amplifier, however there are no graphic equalization options in the user menu of the head unit. The amplifier’s inputs are analog. HiFi amps from before 2010 are big, black modules. HiFi amplifiers in E9x automobiles from 2010 and later may be tiny modules with a metallic finish.
Depending on the car and the model year, the Premium Sound system varies. A 2009 335 sedan, for instance, will feature a system with the “Logic 7” brand, whilst a 2008 M3 would have either the Individual or the Enhanced Premium.

Yes. Speaker cones in Individual/Enhanced Premium audio are yellow. The matte silver or chrome trim around the speakers in the car is another clue that this is the system in your vehicle. The ECS speaker you have displayed is the appropriate type, presuming you have improved premium audio.

Just to be clear, does the standard audio system (m-sport trim) have speakers inside the seat-back grills? I have the grills, but I’ve always wondered if they contain speakers or if the improved audio systems need them.

You should feel a grill if you run your fingers over the carpet underneath. There is one under each seat, and it is fairly enormous. They are in front of the AC vents, which blow air into the feet of the back passengers (more towards the front of the car). Don’t expect any hefty boxes, either, as they aren’t that deep. They aren’t noticeable, therefore I can’t say that I’ve observed anything coming from them.
