This could be a secret key fob feature that some of you weren’t aware of;) Your standard BMW key fob can actually start or stop your vehicle’s engine. Simply switch on your engine by pushing the lock button three times in a single second, and make sure your car has the “remote engine start” option: S1CRA. The engine won’t start for a few seconds. You can push the lock button once more three times to turn off the engine. In contrast to the app, this process must be carried out in close proximity to the vehicle in order to function.

The BMW Remote Engine Start option is now available for purchase.
A number of updates and new services for BMW automobiles have just been published. BMW owners may now choose from a variety of other options in the ConnectedDrive Store to add to their vehicles in addition to the “Uneven Road Surface alert” feature. One of them allows you to remotely preheat the temperature of your BMW vehicle, and it is called “Remote Engine Start.” While Remote Engine Start has been a feature of BMW vehicles from MY 2019, it is now also available as a new “Function on Demand” that can be added to eligible cars that weren’t initially equipped with it. This functionality can be purchased through the ConnectedDrive Store.
Through Remote Software Upgrade, the new functionality can be downloaded and installed wirelessly. This is a fantastic feature for the sweltering summer and icy winter months. You can preheat the interior by turning on the heat or the air conditioning while starting the engine from inside your house or place of employment.
Simply tap a button in the My BMW app to turn on Remote Engine Start, and your BMW’s engine will start, allowing the cabin to reach the ideal temperature. A triple-click of the lock button on the BMW key fob will also activate Remote Engine Start.
You’ll have to purchase aftermarket. Search for Eurostart. There have to be two or three certified installers around, in my opinion. Quite a few plug and play harnesses exist. Pricey, but well worth it during the winters in the Northeast.
I have now installed the EUROSTART remote start. Good news thus far, But after investing around $1700 USD, I wonder if it was worthwhile. I probably wouldn’t have done it if I had realized it would cost this much up front, but it’s done now.
The cost breakdown:
enables remote phone starting from any location, even if you are “out of range.”
Thank you for the details! Chicago winters is something I was also considering, but after seeing the costs, I’ll have to pass. Geeez.
Yes, quite expensive. If you don’t need a backup key fob, you can save the $480. One key fob had to be paired with the unit during installation in order for it to work. So you’re down to one now. I had to purchase another one from the bmw dealer because I prefer to have a backup.
This morning, the remote start came in useful! NYC received an additional 4″ of snow, and the temperature was around 20 when I went for work.
Since I recently bought the car with an extended warranty (100,000 miles), maintenance package, aftermarket sound system upgrade, and remote start, I want to keep it for a while. I’m hoping I get my money’s worth because NYC is freezing every winter. NotSooFast Thank you for the initial suggestion!
Two years ago, my remote start from Carlink cost roughly $1,200. (no spare key). Was in Boston at the time and left my car outside; however, I have a heated garage now that I’m in Milwaukee. Still so worthwhile. As long as the car isn’t underground, where it can’t get a signal, you can start it from anywhere if you have the carlink app.

How is an automatic BMW started manually?
The Steptronic transmission’s fundamental features include a fully automatic driving mode, a manual/sport drive mode that permits greater engine revs prior to shifts, and a manual shift mode that enables manual gearshifting by the driver. Simply tip the drive selector forward or backward into your selected gear, or use the paddle shifters on the steering wheel, to switch from manual/sport auto-shifting mode into the completely manual mode. Up to a certain point, you now have complete control over the ratios you’ll be driving in. The Steptronic transmission is capable of preventing downshifts into risky gears or letting you rev too high into the red zone.
You may also have extra options to choose between Sport, Comfort, and Eco Pro drive modes, depending on the BMW car model. The shift points will be lower in Comfort and Eco drive modes than they would be in Sport mode.

BMW has purposefully left the remote start out of their cars up until this moment. The inclusion of the remote start is prohibited under some legislation that are relevant to the German and European markets. In order to avoid excessive idling, this is done. German brands, like BMW, had an impact on the choice.

The most frequent reason for a car that clicks but won’t start is a dead battery. However, if you find the battery to be in fine condition, you may have a defective starter, loose or corroded battery wires, or a technical issue with the engine.
Can you start an automatic vehicle?
There is no question that automated cars are fantastic, which explains why so many people like them. However, even the best kinds of automobiles occasionally experience problems. Even your automated might fail you in some situations.
If your manual automobile stops in the middle of the road, you can always attempt push-starting it with a little assistance. Most automatic vehicles are incompatible with this technique.
An automatic car could once be started by pushing a button. The autos were equipped with two oil pumps back then. The driveline was connected to one pump, and the engine to the other. Your automatic vehicle will therefore start if you can accelerate the car quickly and cause the torque converter to spin the engine.
Push-starting is possible for some early models of automatic vehicles with the following automatic transmissions:
However, only one oil pump is often installed in automatic automobiles built after the 1960s and attached to the engine. Without oil pressure from the spinning engine, the car won’t start. The transmission will stay in neutral if there is no oil pressure. This makes it useless to push an automatic vehicle. However, if you find yourself in such a situation with your automatic, there are still a few things you may do.
Should you press the brake to start an automated vehicle?
Two conditions must be met in order for the car to be started for the first time: it must be in park, and your foot must be on the brake. Turn the key to start the vehicle while keeping your right foot on the brake and the vehicle in park.
You need to become used to only using your right foot for the gas and brake. The purpose of this is to prevent you from developing the bad habit of “riding the brake,” in which you keep your foot on the brake pedal even when you are not stopping. You shouldn’t ride the brake because it will cause your brakes to wear out sooner.
What happens when an automated vehicle is started in drive?
Avoid launching the car Clutch packs and clutch bands in an automatic transmission employ friction to move certain components during shifting. Immediately putting the transmission into drive after revving the engine prematurely wears away those clutch packs and clutch bands.
Should an automatic vehicle be started in park or neutral?
To protect yourself and avoid putting undue strain on the transmission, you should always start your automobile in park. If your car is a manual, starting it in neutral is an exception because of how shifting works. However, the majority of contemporary vehicles won’t operate unless they are placed in park.
Additionally, certain automatic vehicles with push-button starts need the transmission to be in park before you can start your car. Your automobile might not start if you try to start it without doing this.
Most of the time, when a car is in park and neutral, it will start. The best strategy, though, is to always put your car in park before starting it. An automatic transmission vehicle should only be started in neutral if no other method will work.
