Making a decent car alone is no longer sufficient in the modern automotive industry. In order to serve a variety of customers, it must also include a ton of technology. So, automakers must figure out a way to incorporate all kinds of technology into their vehicles. Over the years, BMW has done it fairly successfully. Even services like the Amazon Alexa personal assistant can be accessed by current BMWs.
To get the most out of it, however, you’ll need to connect your phone to the vehicle and follow a few procedures. Installing the BMW Connected app is the first thing you should do. The next step is to select Amazon Alexa from the dropdown list in the Hub sub-menu. At the bottom of the page, under “Connect with Amazon,” you will find a link to the Amazon Alexa automobile integration.
You will need to enter your login information into the phone because this will link the BMW Connected app to your Amazon account. You should enable your location in the Connected app for improved operation. The next step is to link your phone to your vehicle.
You can accomplish that by selecting apps from the Mobile Devices sub-menu under the iDrive menu. Your phone should show three tiny symbols next to it in the BMW iDrive menu after you’ve connected successfully, indicating that you can use apps.
The next step is to upgrade your BMW Services by pressing the “Option” button adjacent to the iDrive controller once you’ve reached the ConnectedDrive sub-menu. Now, the ConnectedDrive menu should include the Amazon Alexa app. By doing this, you’ll be able to use your personal assistant exactly like you would at home.
Just give a command beginning with “Alexa” by pressing the voice button on the steering wheel. As iDrive 6 owners do not have access to BMW’s personal assistant, which is available exclusively on iDrive 7, this feature essentially means they can have their own personal assistant.

How did you get your car’s Alexa voice assistant to function if you already have it installed? I keep getting messages telling me to reinstall the applications and try again since I can’t go past the pairing option. BMW and Alexa were linked, but the automobile is still unable to recognize it.
I’ve been able to connect the linked drive app with my Amazon Alexa account via the hub tab in CD, but I’m not sure what the problem is since doing it by tapping the mic button doesn’t work. I have “linked voice services” and a “Amazon account connected,” according to the prerequisites section of my BMW CD app, so I’m not sure why it doesn’t function. Additionally, I can disengage from Amazon by clicking the Amazon app within the CD app, so it’s certainly connected.
Let me define what I mean by “buggy.” For location searches, the Alexa search algorithm doesn’t always produce the intended results. However, I frequently discover the location I’m looking for, along with the address, phone number, and a picture of the desired area, if I utilize the IDrive “Google” Online search. YMMV On the other hand, connected houses, devices, etc. That is definitely where Alexa excels. Although I have Alexa in my second car as well, I haven’t fully utilized it yet.
How can I connect my BMW idrive 7 with Alexa?
- Ensure that the “My BMW App” is open and connected to your BMW.
- Click “Profile.”
- Next, select “Amazon Alexa.”
- By selecting “Connect,” you can link your Amazon account to your BMW ID.
- Access your Amazon account by clicking “Sign in.”
- Pick your preferred Alexa language.
- Be sure to enable “Share location with Alexa” on the BMW app.
Has BMW adopted Alexa?
With BMW Alexa, you can engage with your car in a variety of ways, from getting directions and making playlists to checking your tire pressure or the weather to updating your to-do lists. This is the same as with any other BMW cloud-based virtual assistant.
However, it differs from competing in-car systems like Apple and Google in that it has better voice recognition capabilities and a connected ecosystem for smart homes. The voice commands for BMW CarPlay and Android Auto may only be used to carry out tasks inside your car, but the BMW Alexa can communicate with anything your Echo can. That is, controlling the temperature of your home or turning on the porch lights using nothing more than your voice while you’re still in the car on the way home.
Do you actually need to be able to operate the smart lighting in your home from your automobile, though? Furthermore, if you do, couldn’t you just do that from your smartphone in the first place? Using…the Alexa app, perhaps?
We should expect to discover voice control technology in all the places where we spend the majority of our time as it continues to advance. At home, while using our iPhones (or as-of-yet unsuccessful alternatives; if you’ll pardon the pun, Google Glass), and while driving.
This is becoming more and more obvious as in-car computers offer increasingly sophisticated features. Finding information and programs manually through crowded menus isn’t really an option, so voice control is a simple way to skip over a cluttered UI and go right to what you need.
The automakers, notably BMW, have already taken note of this and increased the speech recognition features in their vehicles during the past few years.
How can Alexa be accessed on Carplay?
On your Android or iPhone, confirm that the Alexa app is running the most recent version (Opens in a new window). Tap the Devices icon after opening the app. Select Add Device by tapping the + sign in the top right corner.
Select Amazon Echo as the default device type on the Setup screen. Choose Echo Auto as the exact type of device on the following screen. On the following screen, select Continue.
If you choose that option, make sure the Echo Auto is mounted to your vehicle and connected. Select Continue. The name of your Echo Auto, specifically Echo Auto followed by an alphanumeric string, should appear on the following screen. Click the name.
On the following two screens, click Continue. For your Echo Auto to show up in the list of accessories, you might need to wait a few minutes. After a few minutes, if your Echo Auto hasn’t appeared, remove the cord for 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Then, go back to the previous screen in the Alexa app and try again. When the entry appears, tap it.
If you choose Yes, Bluetooth will be used to play music; if you tap No, an audio wire will be connected. Select the Echo Auto item on the Bluetooth settings screen on your phone. If the device isn’t already connected, tap it to connect it. Tap Continue to return to the setup page in the Alexa app. Then select Bluetooth as the input for your car’s sound and click Continue.
Then, the app gives you the option to change the speaker volume in your automobile. Once you’ve tapped Continue, hit the Play button to listen to your sound. Once Alexa notifies you that your device is ready, hit Continue once again.
The default navigation service that you want to use with Echo Auto is then available for selection. You can enter your home and work addresses on the Locations screen before pressing Continue. On the following screen, you are given the option to experience Auto Mode, which will transform your smartphone into a smart display while you receive directions from the Echo Auto.
How is the BMW voice control reset?
I have a 2010 November BMW 525D model car. When I first got the car, the voice control feature worked perfectly, but now when I press the button on the steering wheel, nothing happens. I checked the settings and discovered that the Voice Control language setting is disabled and that I am unable to enable it because it is in GREY SHADE. Could you please assist me in activating it?
What do you mean by IDrive ON first off? Second, which volume button—the one on the steering wheel or the one on top of the air conditioner—do I press? If you can, send me photographs or a video to explain.
2) Without placing your foot on the clutch or brake, press the START button ( switches on electronics without starting the car)
3) Give everything a few seconds to start functioning (Idrive screen, radio, navigation, etc.).
4) For at least 30 seconds, turn the volume knob on the center console below the Idrive screen ( not the one on the steering wheel)
5) The Idrive screen will go blank after around 30 seconds and then display only BMW.
I tried pressing the knob for even a minute, but nothing happened after numerous attempts, friend.
I’m not aware of any changes being made to that feature on the 5 series. works with both the 7 and 3 Series.
After making numerous unsuccessful attempts, I went to the service center where they checked everything out and upgraded the software to something like version 12.05.500, and now voice control works just perfectly. My 525d is an F10, not an E90.

Is Echo Dot compatible with autos?
The first step is to change the Wi-Fi network on your Echo Dot from your house to the hotspot address of the smartphone you intend to tether.
Launch the Alexa app, select Devices from the list at the bottom, and then tap on the Echo you wish to move inside your car.
After that, you’ll be taken to the Echo Dot setup page, where you just need to follow the on-screen instructions and make sure your phone’s hotspot is turned on.
Press and hold the action button until the light ring turns orange if you don’t see the orange light on your Dot after a few seconds. You must first briefly connect to the network that your Dot is broadcasting before choosing the hotspot name and password for your phone.
That’s it; your Echo Dot is now using your phone’s 3G or 4G connectivity rather than the Wi-Fi in your house. You may want to rename the Dot to Echo Car or something like to make it easier for people to remember.
Just put your Dot in your car at this point. Although the Dot has a non-slip base, you might want to secure it with some sticky tabs to be extra safe. We haven’t encountered any difficulties with the Dot moving around on our car’s dashboard.
Your Dot now obviously depends on your phone’s connection, so if your phone’s data disappears, your Echo won’t function. However, given the ubiquitous availability of 3G and 4G coverage today, you shouldn’t encounter many issues.
The final point—again, perhaps an apparent one—is that since your Echo Dot lacks a battery, it must be powered by your car. Fortunately, you can accomplish this quickly and easily by using a regular Micro USB charging cable hooked into your car’s 12v outlet.
