When CarPlay wasn’t available yet, I had an Apple TV put into one of my previous F10s, and it was fantastic!

The iPhone/iOS platform does not support the Miracast protocol, which is used by the BMW screen mirroring. Apple likes to use its own exclusive AirPlay protocol.

You’ll need to take detours like SLF80 if you want to mirror your iPhone to a BMW. It’s possible, but you’ll need a different gadget that supports Miracast, etc. On the iPhone, there are also no apps that can be downloaded to accomplish this.

There are a lot of quite affordable alternatives available that use Android. Purchase a secondhand one.

1. Configure your iPhone to act as a hotspot

2. Link the wifi of that Android device to your iPhone.

3. Use Screen Mirroring to connect your Android device to your BMW (Miracast)

4. Launch any game you choose on your Android device.

It functions in my X7 after my recent testing. The gadget I used to connect to the BMW was a Galaxy S10+. Since S10+ doesn’t seem to have a setting I can use—at least, not one I could find—I did need to download a different program (Miracast by Tree Team).

I should point out that it’s not quite elegant, though I’m sure there are ways to improve it. I wouldn’t use it for anything that required instant feedback, like playing games, because there was a lag from the S10+ to the BMW. I tested a few videos and found that they rendered properly on the BMW and that there was no audio lag. However, if you look down at the S10+, it will appear out of sync, which is fine because you’re attempting to watch on the bigger BMW display. YMMV.

In case anyone is curious, the answer is no, you cannot use your screen mirror while driving until you enter a code to turn it off. How to do that is covered in various discussions in Bimmerpost and online.
