It should turn back on the next time you open the car if you simply lock the car and leave it idle for a short period of time without the key.
But I always pull over, switch the car off, then put it back on when there is a problem with the vehicle. The majority of the time, it resolved the minor issues.
A restart of iDrive? For roughly 30 seconds, keep the radio’s power button depressed. It will start over.

I’m not sure, but you might not want to completely disconnect the batteries in a BMW without taking some precautions because I’ve heard that if the car loses all power, it might enter an anti-theft mode. I’m not sure because I don’t work on my autos.

When you lock the car and turn it off, iDrive completely shuts off for roughly 12 minutes. In most BMWs, you can restart the computer for the idrive system, navigation, etc. by holding down the volume button for 20 to 25 seconds constantly. The volume is only momentarily turned off when the volume button is pressed; the system is not restarted.

Basic CIC idrives with maps, voice control, and video in motion cost between $2200 and $2500; occasionally, a backup camera can be included in that price.
On my 2008, I’ve been meaning to upgrade as well. a full cic with combos, a front pdc, and a rear camera was desired. Like the OP said, it has all the bells and whistles.
Please also PM me. I have a 2008 M3 and would really like the new CIC with the new controller, buttons, etc., Bluetooth playback for an iPod or Droid phone, new maps with a high-resolution screen, and a backup camera would be a good addition.
Any information you can give me regarding this refit would be greatly welcomed and useful. Alekshop said I would only need to drive to the dealership to have the software updated. TECH, if I installed the entire system myself, what tuning is required afterward.
