Resetting the brake light on a BMW X3 is made simple by:
- Do not start the engine after turning the ignition to the on position.
- Wait 30 seconds before opening the driver’s side door.

I just finished replacing my brake pads, rotors, and sensors, but I still can’t turn the brake light back on. Has anyone else experienced this issue?
I’m experiencing a similar issue. I changed the sensor after noticing it had a broken end. There is still a lot of pad. However, the sensor protrudes far farther than the pad. really frustrating I’ll attempt this.
I merely removed the sensor from the wiring. When switching pads for the track, that stupid thing drives me insane. Simply connecting the two wires will prevent the light from turning on.
Put the key in and hold down the mileage reset button until a yellow triangle appears. Then, release the button to enter reset mode. Hold the BC side button down to reset the brakes after you toggle through until you reach the front or back brakes.
The “!” symbol that I’m sure folks would be experiencing when the sensor isn’t working properly is not reset by the manner described above, at least not entirely.
I had this problem, however when I tried a different sensor, it solved the problem. There is no need to do anything or reset iDrive.
My 2007 Z4 was unaffected by the aforementioned. However, turning the key to position 2 did the trick. When the “reset” phrase appears at the bottom of the odometer screen, press and hold the S/R button. Soon later, the “pad” icon started to flash.
I recently had trouble turning off the warning light for my front brake pads. The brakes were rather new, and when I replaced them, I had no issue resetting the light using the stalk mechanism.
However, a month later I had the suspension installed, and the workers must have removed the sensor and never replaced it. The pad caution light eventually turned on as it was hanging and dragging on the road.
I attempted to reset the sensor through the stalk a few times, but it never “took,” because I was unaware that the sensor was dragging (because the sensor was worn through).
I finally removed the wheel and discovered the issue. I changed the sensor, however using the stalk to reset it didn’t work either. The “clock” would only appear and then disappear, never even cycling all the way around.
I finally purchased the Bavarian Tech diagnostic cable to save myself a trip to the dealer. The light was easily reset by this.
My best opinion is that you only get a few opportunities to reset using the stalk before the issue “sticks.”

How does the pedal feel? When you apply consistent pressure, does it sag at all? When you overnight park, are there any moist areas close to the inside of the wheels?
I didn’t check the amount of the brake fluid. How can I go about doing that? Normally, the pedal feels. Lighting turns on and off. I therefore assume it is the sensor.
There is a sizable black plastic cover on the driver’s side beneath the hood, just where the gas strut—which keeps the hood up—attaches to the body. Both a front and a back clip are present. The brake fluid reservoir can be seen there if you lift it off.
