The Trip Odometer Reset button, which is visible on the instrument cluster, is used in the approach that follows. It doesn’t need a scanner or other specialized equipment.
- Start the engine. Your key should be placed in the ignition. Turn the key two clicks on earlier BMW models. Press and hold the START button on more recent models without depressing the brake pedal. The dash lights will all turn on. You shouldn’t start the car.
- Wait a short while for any warnings to disappear.
- On the instrument cluster, depress and hold the Odometer Reset button.
- A tiny triangle will appear on the dash while you are holding down the ODOmeter Reset button. Hold the Reset button down until you see the Microfilter or Oil symbols.
- You are now in the service menu. Any BMW CBS Service Reminder can be reset here. Press the Reset button until the brake reservoir symbol appears because we want to reset the BMW brake fluid alert. The +/- buttons on the instrument cluster and the Check button on the steering column stalk can also be used to switch between items.
- The Odo Reset button should then be pressed and held for around 5 seconds. The word “Reset?” will appear on the screen.
- Press and hold the button once more after releasing it. The reset will be finished in five more seconds. The signal ought to switch from Red to Yellow. Reset? should be changed to Reset or OK.
We strongly advise consulting the owner’s manual for instructions if you are unable to successfully reset the BMW brake service light using the techniques above.

Once you locate the brake fluid, press and hold the button once more until RESET? appears. From this point on, each button press will display a new service.
To reset, let go of the button and press and hold it once again. Then it ought to restart.
I think this applies to all services in the same way. I previously reset the brakes and oil service in this manner.
On my 2017 X5, how do I reset (turn off) the service indication message? The navigation screen displays it. We recently had our oil changed, but we declined the service for the cabin air filter. They were altered by me. After replacing the oil, the dealer did not reset the indication.
Do you have any programs or apps similar to BimmerlinK? Or do you have nothing to work with, no tools, etc.?
If the latter is true (nothing), you can use the instrument cluster button to reset the service indicators. YouTube is filled with tutorials that will show you how to do this basic task. Simply search for the manual for any BMW F chassis that features the basic, 6WA, or 6WB cluster. Useless instructions exist for BMWs with E chassis.
Do keep in mind that the instrument cluster test procedure’s commencement is fairly similar, so if you find yourself repeatedly seeing the TEST display rather than the SERVICE reset displays, you’re probably doing something somewhat incorrectly. Return to the videos to see what you might be missing.
By pressing the START button, you essentially turn the automobile on, but you DO NOT start the engine. Once the service you wish to reset appears, press and hold the odometer reset button. Press the odometer reset button and then adhere to the instructions.
The first five screens of my service are displayed here. When these pictures were taken, the service interval for my brake fluid had already passed (it’s orange) from when it was scheduled for the first week of June at the dealer. Their screens are green because I changed the oil and the filters myself because they were due in June 2021. After I finished the work, the dealership reset the brake fluid. I also reset the oil and vehicle inspection.
Even if you didn’t have them perform the vehicle check, you could still take the car back and have them reset the service display for the work they did. However, if you read the instructions and experiment with the reset process, you’ll notice how simple/easy it is to do.
Another piece of advice is that the oil service is made to block numerous short periods, so once it’s reset, you can’t reset it again until you’ve driven a certain number of miles.
The service interval was reset because I did the oil and filter changes myself.

We’re going to push this left-side button with everything off and the key in the ignition because it’s a bit simpler and different from other systems you may have seen. firmly pressing, holding, and rotating the accessory key. Simply keep pressing the button on the left until you see the reset appear. The first one is L for oil service; push and hold until the reset light begins to blink; then, release the button and press it once to reset. There are only two options here: brake fluid and oil service. Once you’ve completed the oil service reset, it will automatically switch to brake fluid. If you only want to reset brake fluid, press the button once. You’ll then be selecting the next option across until you reach the end, at which point it will simply return to your normal screen. (0:57) Last but not least, the runflat reset is located right here whenever you pump up the tires, ok. A lot of people are perplexed when they press it once and nothing happens; however, you need to turn the automobile on. Run it or leave the ignition on, but leave it on because leaving the ignition on can drain your battery. Press and hold the button until you see that (1:26) message appear on the dash.
