Follow the steps below to enable or disable the remote function of a replacement BMW key:

  • Close and lock all of the doors while using every remote in the vehicle.
  • Using the new master key, turn the ignition to the “run” position.
  • without opening any doors, remove the key
  • On the new master key, hold down the UNLOCK button (the arrow button).

Follow the steps above with all of your keys except the one you want to remove if you have lost a key or would otherwise like to disable the remote function of one of your keys. This procedure will remove the outdated or lost door remote from the list of door remotes that are currently in use, rendering the lost key useless for remote vehicle unlocking.

Any remote key that isn’t programmed in the same session won’t be able to lock, unlock, or disarm (FZV & DWA) the car, but it will still work to start it.

These remote-controlled keys were used on BMW models E46, E39, X3, and X5 beginning in 1999. keys with OEM Part Numbers KR55WK47993 and others.

1. Use the automobile key to unlock the central locking system (ZV). The central locking system must first be activated.

2. Enter the vehicle and lock all doors.

3. Using the car key, temporarily switch the ignition lock to position 1 and then turn it off. Otherwise, the system is not prepared for initialization because the switching time must not exceed 5 seconds. You must turn the ignition switch to position 1 and insert the key.

4. Press button #2 at the radio transmitter and hold it down. Then, within five seconds of taking out the key from the ignition, push and hold button #2.

5. Three times depress button #1. The second button must be held in place. Then, with button #2 still depressed, you have up to 10 seconds to hit the Roundel button THREE times.

Releasing button #2

7. The ZV indicates that a radio transmitter has been successfully initialized by “Locking” and then immediately “Unlocking.”

You begin the programming of any extra remote keys on STEP 4 if you have any. Never put another remote key into the ignition switch; if you do, the programming for the first key will be lost.

Initialization will stop and start again if the ZV doesn’t send a return signal. Three additional radio transmitters can be initialized after the initialization process is finished. Every radio transmitter must repeat the process outlined in step 4 above within 30 seconds to avoid initialization stand-by being turned off. All other active radio transmitters must also be initialized during initialization. Never start the engine again while the initialization process is in progress. All radio transmitters would need to be re-initialized if this happened.

Alternative steps to take if the previous steps don’t work or if you don’t have a functional remote:

1. Quickly turn the key to position 1 five times. Remove the key. 3. Press the lock button three times while holding the unlock button pressed. 4. Within 30 seconds, press the same button if you have another key. 5. Start the engine to complete

Optional method 2:

1. Enter the vehicle and lock all doors and windows using both keys. 2. Turn the ignition to position 1 and insert the functional key. 3. After returning the key to position 0, remove it from the ignition. 4. Using the functional key, press the BMW logo (lock button) three times while maintaining pressure on the unlock button. Ideally, doors lock and unlock. 5. Using the new key, press the BMW logo (lock button) three times while holding down the unlock button, then release the unlock button. Once the doors have locked and unlocked, you’re done.

The most popular technique involves breaking the driver’s window or picking the door lock; after doing so, the burglar will reach their arm through the window and connect a small, black box to the car’s OBD port. Reprogramming Chip keys is possible?

To curb auto thefts, automotive manufacturers have offered transponder car keys since 1995. The ignition of today’s cars cannot be hot wired, making it impossible for thieves to drive off in a stolen automobile. The top plastic portion of the key contains a programmable transmitter chip that is part of the transponder, chip, or smart key. The transponder in the car’s ignition receives a coded signal from the chip and decodes it. The car will now start after receiving and positively recognising the coded signal. The majority of automakers give customers two smart keys or fobs to prevent failures and loss. You can replace and/or reprogramme the new chip key or fob if you lose one or both of the keys. It is strongly advised to always keep two chip keys on hand and to swap out any that are lost or broken.

How much does it cost to reprogram a key?

The price to reprogram a fob is determined by a number of factors. Although it’s difficult to provide a general price, reprogramming often costs between $50 and $250. Here are some elements that can affect price:

  • Type of Fob: Reprogramming smart keys with a transponder (RFID), keyless ignition, or other additional features is typically more expensive.
  • Vehicle Brand: Manufacturer-specific fob complexity varies. Some automakers make it more difficult to reprogram keys.
  • Vehicle Model: Within a given automaker, some models feature key fobs that are more complicated than others.
